Meet Gilligan!

Gilligan is an assumed male Green-Wing Macaw, born around 1999, who arrived at Rhode Island Parrot Rescue on April 23, 2024. If you're looking for a gentle giant with a heart of gold and plenty to say, Gilligan may be your perfect match.

One of the first things you'll notice about Gilligan is just how sweet he is. He loves greeting everyone with a cheerful "Hi!" and can often be heard chatting away with anyone nearby. Whether you're having a conversation, making dinner, or talking on the phone, don't be surprised if Gilligan decides to add his own commentary and contribute his two cents!

Gilligan enjoys talking, singing, whistling, and spending time with his favorite people. While he is friendly and social, he does tend to form a stronger bond with one person and enjoys being part of their activities. One of his favorite pastimes is bouncing up and down on his door perch while keeping an eye on everything happening around him.

This handsome macaw is also refreshingly easygoing when it comes to food and is not a picky eater. In a previous home, Gilligan reportedly formed a close friendship with a cat and loved interacting with them. However, every environment is different, and this does not necessarily mean he will be comfortable with other animals in his future home.

Gilligan's appearance is just as unique as his personality. His eyes are absolutely stunning, with one iris noticeably darker than the other. While they may look different, he sees perfectly well and gets around without any issues.

Most importantly, he is a happy, affectionate, and incredibly sweet bird who simply wants to be included in the lives of the people he loves. If you're looking for a loyal companion who will keep you company, make you laugh, and always have something to say, Gilligan may be the one you've been waiting for.

Happy Fun Fact Friday!
Did you know that birds have an eye bone?

The scleral ring (also known as the sclerotic ring) is a structure made of multiple interlocking bony plates called osscicles, forming a complete ring shape within the sclera of the eye. This structure is not only found in birds- it is also found in most fish and reptile species, and has been found in both avian and non-avian dinosaurs.

 Annual Animal Sanctuary Caregiver Day

Annual Animal Sanctuary Caregiver Day

Tomorrow, June 12, is Animal Sanctuary Caregiver Day.
It's an opportunity to honor the vital work of caregivers in animal sanctuaries. From daily cleaning to daily enrichment, caregivers are at the front lines of providing sanctuary residents a life of dignity and safety.
Co-founded by the Global Federation of Sanctuaries, by whom we are accredited, we recognize the emotional and physical challenges caregivers face while providing a safe and nurturing environment for animals who have experienced trauma.
This day:
-Celebrates the dedication and resilience of caregivers.
-Acknowledges the emotional labor involved in animal care.
-Encourages appreciation for the skills and commitment required in this field.
Here at MAARS we couldn't deliver our daily, individualized care for our flock of about 100 without them. We are deeply grateful for our exceptional volunteers!

Parrots are often thought of as delicate pets, but they are actually very resilient animals with strong survival instincts. As prey and flock species, they have evolved to hide any signs of weakness to avoid becoming a target for predators. This is known as the masking or preservation reflex.

Because of this, a bird may appear completely normal—perching, eating, and behaving as usual—while quietly fighting illness. By the time a parrot begins to show obvious signs such as fluffed feathers, lethargy, or loss of appetite, they are often already very sick. In many cases, they may have been unwell for days or even weeks. By the time you notice something is wrong, your bird may already be in a critical condition.

Most importantly, eating does not always mean a bird is healthy. Some birds will continue to eat—or even pretend to eat—until they are too sick to hide it any longer.

Early detection depends on recognizing subtle changes. Small differences in behavior, vocalization, posture, droppings, or energy level can be the first indication that something is wrong. Establishing what is normal for your individual bird is essential, as each bird may show illness differently.

Many factors can contribute to poor health in parrots, including improper diet, stress, environmental conditions, trauma, toxins, infections, and genetic issues. A normal outward appearance does not always mean a bird is healthy—any deviation from their usual behavior should be taken seriously.

Parrots are naturally alert, curious, and engaged with their environment. When that changes, it is often a sign worth paying attention to. By the time a bird “looks sick,” they are often already in a critical condition.

Understanding this instinct to hide illness is one of the most important aspects of responsible bird care—and recognizing it early can truly make all the difference.

🎉 Placement Announcement: Gary Has Found His Match! 🦜❤️

Today was a very special day at Rhode Island Parrot Rescue as our handsome little Green-Cheeked Conure, Gary, officially went home with his new caregiver, Claire!
Gary arrived at RIPR having been deeply loved in his previous home, and it showed. This sweet little guy has spent his life knowing kindness, enrichment, and plenty of attention. A master forager with a curious spirit and a love for treats, toys, and human companionship, Gary quickly stole the hearts of everyone he met along the way.
When Claire came to meet Gary, it didn’t take long to see that something special was happening. Having recently lost her beloved conure, she deeply missed the joy, companionship, and daily connection that only a parrot can bring. Her warmth, compassion, and gentle nature radiate from the moment you meet her, and it was clear that Gary felt that too.
Watching these two together brought smiles to all of us. Sometimes a placement just feels right, and this was certainly one of those moments.
🥰Gary leaves our care with a wonderful foundation already built and a future filled with love, enrichment, and companionship. We know he will continue to be spoiled (as he should be!) and cherished every single day.
💕Claire, thank you for opening your heart and home to a parrot in need. We are honored to have been part of your journey and cannot wait to watch your friendship grow.
Please join us in congratulating Gary and Claire as they begin this exciting new chapter together! ❤️🦜
Happy Placement Day, Gary! We know you’re going to be one very loved little bird.

Meet Jasper! 💚

Jasper is a handsome male Senegal Parrot born on November 1, 2012, who arrived at Rhode Island Parrot Rescue on December 13, 2025. He is currently looking for a patient and understanding home where he can blossom at his own pace.

He came to the rescue after his previous guardians found it difficult to manage his behaviors during hormonal season. While he can be cautious around new people and unfamiliar situations, beneath that shy exterior is a sweet little parrot who simply needs time to feel safe and comfortable.

One of Jasper's favorite activities is relaxing outside in his travel cage, where he can enjoy the fresh air and watch the world go by. He also has a special love for dried pasta, which is a great way to earn his trust! Once he's feeling comfortable, Jasper will show off one of his favorite talents—whistling "If You're Happy and You Know It, Clap Your Hands."

He is not the type of bird who will instantly become your best friend. He is looking for someone who understands that trust takes time and is willing to let him move at his own pace. For the right person, watching Jasper gain confidence and come out of his shell will be incredibly rewarding.

If you have the patience to let a shy bird shine, Jasper may be the perfect companion for you. 💚

Say ❌ no

We’re calling on our Rhode Island supporters to contact Gov. Mckee and ask him to sign the rodenticide ban into law. We found out that the New England Pest Management Association is livid about this legislation and has launched a so-called "VoterVoice" advocacy campaign urging him to veto the bill and squash the will of RI residents. We can’t let big industry/lobbying interests win over RI’s beloved eagles, owls, hawks and other wildlife. https://friendsofanimals.org/rhodeisland/
