Pressure
The amount of pressure you use on the horse determines a lot. An observation I’ve noticed lately is people using too much pressure or too little. Sensitivity is a big thing with horses. Some horses are super sensitive while others not so much. The key is to recognize the amount of pressure your horse needs in a learning application. People who use too much and get an energetic or dramatic response from their horse need to learn to recognize this response and learn to ask with as little as possible to start with and give the horse a chance to try. You will soon find that if you tone down your “ask” to the horse, you’ll have a better chance at recognizing your horses try. As my friend and mentor Bryan Neubert says, “learn to get more done with less”. If you learn to tone down your pressure and recognize the smallest try in the horse you’ll soon get a more willing partner. Just imagine a lot of pressure is the equivalent of basically you yelling at your horse. If you are always yelling, your pressure and energy are way too high and you will get that energetic response. The opposite of that is the horse that is not sensitive and the rider that uses too little pressure. You need to use the amount of pressure needed to make the change. I’ve seen so many riders doing a good thing by asking with soft pressure but not getting the desired change in their horse. This can make a horse grumpy because they are giving a too soft cue on repeat that they don’t understand. Riders have to recognize when they need to up the pressure or they end up nagging and confusing the horse. Learn to recognize the sensitivity of your horse and adjust pressure accordingly. Your horse will thank you.

Education-
Too many people are trying to accomplish things with their horse without doing the proper preparation to get the results they want. For example, a client will ask “can you teach me to side pass?” The answer is “yes I can”. Before we start, can you do a turn on the forehand and a turn on the haunches? A turn on the forehand is moving the hind end left or right, while the front stays still. A turn on the haunches, is moving the front left or right, while the hind end stays still. A good majority of the time the answer is no. If you can move the front and rear of your horse with a touch of leg pressure, both directions, a side pass isn’t out of reach. If you can’t, you need to go back and fill in those holes, so your horse can understand what you were asking. If you take the big thing you were trying to accomplish and learn to break it down to the horse into small pieces and are consistent with your timing, pressure and releases your horse will be more relaxed, confident, and understanding with what you are asking. So many issues could be corrected if people could learn to not automatically assume that their horse has the required knowledge. By taking that time to educate them, you will not only make them more confident, understanding, and relaxed, but you (the rider) will have better timing, feel, and balance. More tools to use with your horse in all situations.

Working with a Friesian and a Tennessee Walker that are in for training. Getting them used to being flagged by a rider on another horse and being the horse and rider doing the flagging. The more tools they have in their toolbox, the more confident and willing they become.
