Here you can see a great comparison between a very young tooth and an old, worn one. It is impressive how much crown is worn over the course of a horse's life.

“Bit wrinkles”

One of the most commonly asked questions is, “how many wrinkles should my horse have from the bit?” One? Two? Three?

The correct answer is NONE. ZIP. ZERO.
“But that’s how we’ve ALWAYS done it.”

And do you know why? Hiking a bit up tight in a horses mouth is an old trick used to highten sensitivity to the bit (through being in a constant state of pain or discomfort) rather than taking the time to teach a horse to be soft. It might work temporarily, but the horse will over time become dull to it and you will have to keep adding more and more “wrinkles” to add more discomfort, then eventually a tie-down from the horse tossing its head or rearing, then finally the horse is “no good” after it cant take any more pain and keeps acting out more severely.

A horse that’s relaxed and comfortable with the bit will pick it up with its tongue and carry it in the most comfortable spot for him. Then, it will feel the slightest change in your hands when you ask for something rather than having to yank and pull hard to get what you want. If you wouldn’t ride around with your spurs stuck in your horse’s side the whole ride, why would you want the bit doing the same thing?
