With Indiana’s gun opener starting tomorrow here are a few things to consider:
-Don’t assume you missed if you don’t find blood! It can sometimes take a deer a while to start bleeding. Especially with the smaller calibers that are now legal.
-Try to take very good detail to where your deer was standing at when you shot. Sometimes in the heat of the moment, especially with a gun, you can lose track of where he was. This can be a big deciding factor on if you find blood and retrieve your deer, or if you assume you missed.
-When in doubt back out! There will be a lot of other hunters out this weekend. If you are unsure of your shot back out and wait until dark. Don’t push a wounded deer onto another property or in front of another hunter.
-We would highly recommend NOT using the newly legal .223/5.56 caliber! I know this might be an attractable caliber for a young child to start with, for lack of recoil, but it’s not very lethal for deer. The last thing you want is for a young hunter to not kill their deer they shoot. A couple other calibers to consider for low recoil is the 350 Legend, .243, or even a trusty 20 ga shotgun like most of us older guys started with.
