This week was Veterinary Technician Appreciation week! We celebrated our technicians and receptionists for all the hard work they do. Our vet techs are an amazing group of kind, compassionate, and hard working individuals who come together as a team and help keep our hospital running every single day. Vet techs are dental hygienists, anesthesiologists, nurses, Phlebotomists, and most importantly, patient advocates. Thank you to all of our hard working technicians and keep up the amazing work!!

This brave little girl is Yui! Yui is a 4 month old Keeshond who came in for her first Bordetella vaccine, flea control application, and a microchip! Microchipping is a quick, inexpensive procedure that can be done at any time. If little Yui can do it, anyone can ;)

According to the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, "Only about 22 percent of lost dogs that entered the animal shelters were reunited with their families. However, the return-to-owner rate for microchipped dogs was over 52 percent (a 238 percent increase)".

We offer microchipping for dogs and cats at any age! Call us to schedule or if you have any questions. Also, don't forget to register your pet's microchip!

Hot pavement can result in burns on your pets paws. Make sure you always test the pavement by touching it with the back of your hand. If you cannot hold it there for more than 7 seconds, then it is too hot for your pets paws.

Laurel Pet had a mobile CAT Scan unit come in to our parking lot this week. There was a cat that had no airflow through his nostrils. A CAT Scan (along with a scope of the nose) is the best way to look in a nose because there is a lot of irregularly shaped bones in the face. It shows good detail of structures within bone.

Delilah the goat!!!!

Delilah was brought into us two weeks ago because she was previously attacked by a dog. She lives in a protected area but a dog got into the pen and attacked her. She had a leg wound that was fixed by an emergency hospital but did not heal because of an infection. We had to amputate the leg. The owner said that we were the only hospital that he could find that would see a goat as an appointment.

Dr. Ebling did the surgery and we took care of her for the next 10 days. We had to get the right food and figure out how to get her outside to exercise on three legs. She was a trooper and really made it easy on us. She is now at home and doing very well. The entire hospital loved having her here and really enjoyed taking care of her. If you see a three legged goat in hollywood, it might be Delilah.

01 Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia (IMHA) - VeterinaryPartner.com - a VIN company!

Dr. JD Calsyn, our board certified internist, lectured this week at the Southern California Veterinary Medical Association. It was a lecture in front of 30 local veterinarians about a disease that causes destruction of the Red Blood Cells. It is called IMHA - Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia. Here is a link on the disease. http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&A=1390

Immune-mediated hemolytic anemia is a condition where the patient’s immune system begins attacking his own red blood cells. What occurs on a microscopic level is this: the branch of the immune system that produces antibodies begins to direct them against the patient’s own red blood cells. The red bl...

Here is our case of the month.

Omeed is a 12 week old boxer puppy who had a distended belly and was historically a poor eater. He was also extremely emaciated. A blood test showed he had low proteins in the blood. We did multiple other tests and they were all negative.

He had exploratory abdominal surgery. We found a very irregular intestine at one spot. It was removed and biopsied. It was diagnosed as a meckel's diverticulum. It is a very rare congenital problem in dogs and cats. In his case it caused an absorption problem and protein leakage in the gut.

He recovered but still remained sick. We did a second ultrasound three days later and found an intussusception that was not there before. This is a serious problem when one part of the intestine telescopes into another part. It is life threatening. He had a second surgery and the problem was fixed.

He has done very well since surgery and has almost completely recovered. The owner obtained him to keep his other older arthritic dog company. He had to get a third dog because Omeed was so active that it was too much for the first dog.

Omeed should have a normal life expectancy. He survived two very serious diseases and is lucky to have such a dedicated owner.

We are happy to say that Osa has gotten a home. We do have more animals to adopt. If you are interested let us know. Is there a preference on color, age, etc?

04/11/2012

Here is another cat that needs a home at LPH. Osa is a 1 year old cat who was hit by a car and found by animal control. Due to the severity of the injuries, she was to be put to sleep. Our new surgeon saw her and could not let that happen and elected to save her and preform the surgeries herself. Osa has completely healed and now needs a good home.

Osa is a 1 year old cat sweet, playful, timid female cat in need of a home. Two months ago she was brought into the clinic by animal control. She had been hit by a car and could not walk. X-rays were then performed which revealed pelvic fractures and a femur fracture. Due to the severity of her injuries, she was to be put to sleep. Our surgeon, could not let that happen since she was otherwise healthy and a very sweet cat. So, after waiting 5 days for the owners to claim her to no avail, she adopted her. The surgeon then fixed the fracturesand with plates and screws. She has been recovering for the last 8 weeks since the surgery was done. She is now running around with no signs of any problems. Osa has also been spayed and is up to date on shots. She is now completely healthy and ready to be adopted.

Osa is a wonderful cat. She loves to cuddle and play. She has a strong hunting instinct and chatters while chasing a feather. She will fetch the ball and likes a little rough-housing. She is timid around strangers, and may not be ideal for children. She needs someone who can give her individualized attention to bring her out of her shell. She seems to be fine with other pets. She will bring many smiles and laughs because she is such a wonderful cat. Please come and visit her.

Hello I use to bring all my cats there when I lived in Weho year round. Now I’m just living there in the winter time while doing nurse practitioner assignments in West Hollywood. I lost touch with Roxi who used to work there as a tech who was awesome! She used to also cat sit for me when I live there. I’m trying to get in touch with her again because a good friend of mine who still lives in LA year-round is looking for an awesome cat and dog sitter. I had Roxi on Facebook and lost touch with her so maybe she left Facebook? I no longer have her phone number or lost it? Please help? Thank you kindly :-)
LOS ANGELES AREA: Love comes in little packages. Murray continues to charm. He's a Romeo in fur - his fur. He still prefers a lap to this 1 bedroom carpeted condo box. His cold is resolving with clear eyes and no runny nose. One more week or so should see him released into my bedroom where I'm sure I'll have another bed buddy. IF YOU OR KNOW OF ANYONE WHO WANTS A BUDDY, PLEASE LET ME KNOW. STRICT CONDITIONS ARE THAT HE REMAIN AN INDOOR CAT ONLY AND REMAIN A PERMANENT PART OF YOUR FAMILY. ALSO, IF YOU'RE CAT SAVVY, THAT'S A PLUS.
