$305 / $3,000 raised to help with this cost
Rescue is at times so rewarding and fulfilling and full of happiness but it’s also unexpected, and scary, and stressful, and really, really hard. Yesterday and into the early hours of this morning, we had one of those days. It resulted in a $3,000 vet bill but ultimately a safe and recovering dog, which is always our end goal.
A little over 2 weeks ago Annie was surrendered to us with very little info/history. She came in pretty thin and we started her on a good high calorie feeding regimen but about a week in we realized she was not just gaining weight in a normal way. We became suspicious of a possible pregnancy and confirmed this with our vet on Tuesday. We determined that she would likely be due in a little under 3 weeks and scheduled another xray for 2 weeks out, all seemed well.
Yesterday afternoon Annie unfortunately birthed a very premature puppy. We rushed them both to Village Vet, the puppy was sadly far too premature to be saved, but after an assessment of mom and an ultrasound on the babies all showing normal healthy heartbeats, plus the determination that she didn’t seem to be in active labor, the vet thought the odds of trying to save the remaining puppies with little to no risk to Annie were good. We took her home to monitor, but around 1AM she birthed another premature, stillborn puppy.
We brought her this time to Orchard Park Vet and the ultrasound showed that the puppies heart rates were low, indicating they were in distress. We knew then that Annie would not be able to carry her puppies to term and that the safest option for her was an emergency c-section, but that the puppies were sadly too young to be saved 🥺
Annie is now back home recovering from surgery, tired but so far doing well. This is yet another dog we took in expecting it to be a “normal” foster and adoption experience, with very high unexpected vet bills. We’ll do anything to save our dogs, but the more we get like this, the harder it is to commit to helping more.
If you can consider donating to help recoup some of the costs for her vet visits/surgery, please visit the link(s) below to send via PayPal, Venmo, or purchase supplies off our Amazon wishlist. And if you can’t donate, PLEASE encourage people to spay/neuter their pets! Reach out to rescues if they can’t afford it at a regular vet. When questioned, Annie’s owners said she couldn’t be pregnant, they only had girl dogs. But they didn’t consider the dogs in the same apartment building that shared a yard, where she often was outside unattended. If you have unaltered animals, pregnancy is more likely than you’d think.

*We’ve added a few recovery suits as we only have 1 in her size and she doesn’t love wearing a cone. Those would be extremely helpful, along with the Pro Plan High Protein wet food as she eats at least 1 can of that per day.*
