I appologize for the terrible video quality😂 but the scenery was too perfect not to post!

Penny is nearing the end of her 30 day start/restart and has come such a long ways! This video was taken last week, and she’s even improved a lot more on her side passes/pivoting off her hind end since!

This was Penny’s first time riding in the outdoor and there was definitely a lot of new sights to take in, so I was a little more forgiving on her circles not being perfect so long as she maintained a steady mind and responded well to everything I asked of her. Super proud of this little mare and her progress🤍

Finn has come quite a ways in only 10 rides. First we struggled getting weight on him which led to getting him back under saddle late. Then it took a couple of rides to get his feet freed up, and finally got him soft to the bit.
Over the last couple of days I teamed up with Mustang Matt to help Finn build his confidence and find his feet and keep them under him. Turns out 16hh and being all leg has its flaws😅
Thank you, Matt, for helping Finn and I out as well as giving myself a lot of new information on how to handle different kinds of problematic horses and how to overcome many situations.

Recently, I was asked to “restart” this cute little 2 year old reining filly, Penny! And by restart, meaning she had a couple of rides on her last fall and hasn’t been ridden since.

This video was my 2nd time hopping on her. Our biggest goal this first week will be freeing up her feet and keeping her forward momentum as well as building her confidence with seat and leg cues.

It’s always great getting on these good minded c**ts and watching how quickly they learn and grow in such a short amount of time🥹

Special thank you to McKinzie Quarter Horses for opening up your facility for me to work with Penny!

Why is it important to bend the horse around your inside leg?

Bending the horse around your inside leg helps your horse balance out, especially when traveling in a circle. The idea is to keep your horse’s hind end following the front, not in line with them. Imagine a string attached from the poll to the saddle horn to the dock… when this string is in a straight line, the rider has less control as to where the horse is traveling. At this point, the horse has a higher power and more susceptible to an accident. This can result in blow-ups, bolting, and many other undesired behaviors.
When this string has a slight curve to it, it’s still the same string going in the same direction, but now there is more control as the rider and a very clear direction on where the horse is being asked to go.

In addition, this also helps the horse learn to use their hind end a bit more and push off with their back legs instead of relying on pulling with the fronts.
The idea is each part of the horse is working independently and muscles are being worked evenly.

Took advantage of the good weather to bring Journey to the outdoor arena for a bit to play around. She hadn’t been in an outdoor arena since last fall and she was a little on the fresher side from having a week off but maintained a good mind about the “new” environment 🎶Since You Got Gone - Morgan Wallen (unreleased)
