I had someone at Equine Affair ask me what I do.
I told him I provide drop-in care for livestock and pets — feeding, watering, turnout, head counts, walks, medication administration, all the basics.
He asked my rate.
I told him.
He chuckled and said…
“You’re overqualified.”
And it really struck me.
But here’s the thing — when you hire me, you’re not hiring someone who just says they “love animals.”
You’re hiring someone who has:
Successfully ran a nasogastric tube on a choking, underweight horse in a snow storm because the vet couldn't reach us— without sedation.
Performed CPR on a dog so their owner could say goodbye.
Loaded and hauled a horse 2 hours at night for emergency care when they couldn't come to us.
Rehabbed injuries, sicknesses, poor quality of life, that you’d never even know happened today.
Sat up through the night with animals in labor.
Treated severe leg injuries mid cross-country transport and kept things under control.
Gone out in snowstorms to feed, blanket, and protect animals when conditions got bad.
Broke open frozen water troughs at 1am.
Cared for newborns in the harshest conditions.
This isn’t just a job for me.
This is experience. This is instinct. This is responsibility.
So yes — I am overqualified.
And when something goes wrong (because sometimes it does)…
that’s exactly who you want walking onto your property.
Because animals don't wait for perfect conditions... and neither do I.
