Tidbit Tuesday - Petrie edition
Nutrition plays a critical role in fetal development for sugar gliders. During in pouch development, a mother’s diet directly impacts the health and growth of the joeys developing in her pouch. When nutritional needs aren’t fully met- especially calcium, protein, and key micronutrients- it can result in low out of pouch weight, underdeveloped joeys, and a heartbreaking struggle for survival.
Recently, we experienced this firsthand. One of our rescued mamas had twins oop on April 25. Sadly, one didn’t make it. The other, Petrie, was out of pouch at just 7grams, whereas we typically see joeys out of pouch no lower than 11 grams. At just 3 days out of pouch, the foster mom had to step in with supplemental feedings, as the mother was not producing enough milk to support her joey.
Petrie was out of pouch (OOP) at just 7.8g. At 18 days OOP, he weighs only 9.9 grams, compared to the typical 27 grams for his age. He’s been through a lot: battling dehydration, formula changes, and digestive issues.
This tiny fighter needs round-the-clock care:
• Feedings every 2 hours
• Specially formulated gas drops twice daily
• Subcutaneous fluids twice a day
Despite the odds, Petrie keeps fighting, and we’re doing everything we can to support his fragile little body.
Inadequate milk production can stem from poor nutrition, stress, or even inbreeding, a concern we’re monitoring closely. Nursing moms also need an extra portion of staple, as they’re eating for multiple bodies not just their own. This situation is a stark reminder that lineage breeding isn’t just about pairing gliders, it’s about the lineage (genetics), health, and responsible care.
This is a reminder of how essential proper diet is for breeding lineage gliders, and why we’re so passionate about educating others on balanced nutrition. It’s not just about health, it’s about giving these tiny lives the best possible start.
