Canine College is a dedicated dog training facility in the Fort Drum-Watertown area of upstate New York, offering a wide variety of training classes and dog sports. Founded in 2012 as Cosgrove K-9's, which offered private classes and in-home dog boarding, the business became Canine College in 2015 when it moved into a a building shared with Best Friends Pet Care on Eastern Boulevard. It soon becam

e apparent that Canine College needed room to grow and expand its training services, and the business moved to Edmund Street in spring 2016 where it continued to expand and grow as both a doggie daycare and a training facility. In January 2017, Canine College made the switch from offering training, daycare, and boarding to becoming a dedicated training facility, and moved into its current home on outer Pearl Street, just minutes from Fort Drum. The new facility is conveniently located across the street from a groomer, Jessie's Pet Spa, and just a minute down the road from a vet clinic, Valley Vet. Canine College currently offers the largest variety of dog training classes in the local area. Group classes include puppy school, basic and advanced obedience training, dog tricks, and Nosework (scent detection). One-on-one classes are also available for addressing problem behaviors, polishing competition obedience, conformation, and public access training for Service Dogs. AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC), Advanced CGC, and Urban CGC preparation and testing are available. Additionally, Canine College is home to Watertown Working Dog Club, which focuses on IPO / Schutzhund training, Nosework, and Search-and-Rescue.

Oakley now knows how to pick up ergonomic & regular crutches as well as canes. His mobility harness is on the way so we can start working on his bracing. His owner had a serious training accident while I had Oakley in a Board & Train for Obedience last year and mobility is going to be a longterm, if not lifelong issue. Since then we have shifted his training towards mobility & luckily Oakley is a fantastic Service Dog Candidate and thriving in his new role.

Oakley is back to finish his task training as Mobility dog. His main tasks are retrieval and bracing. He will get a custom made harness by Bold Lead Design and overall I could not be happier with his progress. The only thing we have to work through is his excitement when he sees anyone on crutches right now. Crutches to him means: Mom! That is the connection he has made but thats going to be an easy enough fix 🙂

This is what clear communication looks like. Penny is learning how to turn off the pressure from the electric collar and you can’t even tell that we are using it at all. At the same time we are topping it off with straight up positive reinforcement. Single clicks for duration and double click for release.

It also takes a specific type of person to do this with. You have to have someone who understands the level of commitment and consistency it takes.

If you wonder what understanding looks like, this is it. This is also why I don’t use commands in the conditioning phase. I want the dog to understand what to do when he feels the sensation and where to go. I also like to use retractable leashes because they have give and take by themselves. It is one of my all time favorite tools. Hated by many, loved by me 😉 . Anyhow, Logan is making great strides with the ecollar. Hopefully we can hit the trail soon and see how he does on the walker 😊

After 10 days of isolation I went out and worked my own dogs for a change. Watch Hafthor and Hulda work in tandem at the PX. Its been a while since Hulda has been in public access and this has been the first time ever that these two have worked together in public. 😊 Need Training? Go to www.k9college.net

All Board & Trains are pushed a week out since I really can’t work dogs for a few days.
Start/Pick up day will be next week Friday.

I am on Paxlovid. So hopefully it will resolve over the weekend. Every muscle in my body hurts from coughing, so please bear with me.
