Training doesn't always have to be strict hour long sessions. When working with horses, especially the younger ones, many shorter sessions instead of one long session has more impact. We can get so focused on our goals, that it's easy to over do it with the horse.

I like to alternate. I have a goal in mind for that training session, but am flexible to the fact that I'm dealing with a living being with it's own emotions and the end may not always look like what I'd had in mind at the beginning. Consistency is the key. Even if the sessions are short, sneaking in a couple in a day or at least one a day will get you further in the long run than one long, drawn out training session. You just have to remember that they need days off, too.

Take advantage of these beautiful winter days we have right now!

Louie has been able to see his future herd mates for the past few weeks, but not been able to touch noses. It's how horses tell eachother they're friends.

Having adjoining paddocks where horses can meet over the fence is ideal when introducing new horses after they've been quarantined.

Louie got turned out and they're all just hanging out like old friends. As long as there's no fighting over the fence, Louie will go out with the herd later today and finally get to be with gen pop.

Isla took her horse, Louie, out for a walk around the property the other day. They both did great. Louie liked to look around a bit, but Isla's calm energy helped him see there was no danger in the woods.

Can you tell if Flora is lame or not? What do you see in her walk?

I put her on the lunge line today after giving her some time off after being sore when I last rode her. The way she's walking on the lunge line tells me she still is.

I see her holding her tail off to the side. That's the first indicator to me that she's sore. Horses should carry their tails straight behind them or flat (depending on the breed). She also looks stiff in her hind legs as she walks. She has fybrotic myopothy on her hind left, so she has a tight hamstring on that leg. Even though she had her leg massaged a bit before starting work, it still looks tight to me.

So many times people mistake behavior issues for pain. The horses tell us they're feeling off or in pain if we know what to look for. It's only when we ignore their communication and signs do they have to escalate their behavior. Once we know better, we can do better. Take time to know your horses normal and what they are communicating to you. It's a two way street.

Louis is settling in so nicely at the farm. He loves attention from people and likes to go stand and chat with the other horses in the pen behind him.

He is sooo sweet, and is what we call "in your pocket". It's really cute and enduring, however, horses need to know our space bubbles. If not, as soon as he spooks, whoever is leading him will get run over.

So, Isla and I are working with him to teach him how to create space and wait to be invited into ours before coming forward. He's a quick study, I know it won't take long for him to get this down.

Yesterday was a perfect day for a ride down the driveway. The corn is being harvested around us making for new scenery with the horses. Everybody enjoyed a walk outside of the arena!

Take advantage of these beautiful days while they're left. There are some lesson spots available for both tiny tots and regular lessons.

A few training spots are also available for starting horses or working out issues to help create a balanced, more relaxed horse.

Horsemanship

I have loved horses as long as I can remember; always jumping at any opportunity to be around them. Every birthday party was spent riding trails with friends. When I turned 12, I was able to volunteer at Diamond T Ranch taking out trails. I would bike 5 miles every other day to get there.

Eventually I bought Chardonnay, my first horse, from there when I was 15. He taught me so much! He was a flea bitten gray Arabian who was so sweet. He would run up to me in the pasture when I’d call his name. But he also had a stubborn side to him! We got into many arguments when I was younger because I wanted him to do something he didn’t want to do.

Looking back, there is so much I would have done differently. I couldn’t afford lessons, so everything was self taught and learned through reading.

I want to help you better communicate with your horse to create the best possible relationship with them. Chardonnay and I had a relationship like no other, but looking back I see there was a lot I missed.
