On Tuesday, I got to spend time with Chucky.
Not “Chucky the case.”
Not “Chucky from the pound.”
Not “Chucky who needed training.”
Not “Chucky who we thought was a girl for longer than we should probably admit.”
Not “Chucky who turned out to have a severe chicken allergy because apparently even his immune system said, no chicken. EVER.”
Just Chucky.
A dog.
A sweet, slow, soft little guy who has been through far more than any dog should have to go through.
Chucky spent months at WDP. He was a little reactive, a little unsure, and he needed more than the pound could give him. So he went to training, and I visited him there to help him work through the big scary feelings that came from surviving whatever life threw at him before he ever landed in Waterbury.
And this was the first time since I’ve known him that I got to just be with him.
No big agenda. No urgent networking. No “how do we fix this.” No trying to get him from one step to the next.
Just Chucky, being a dog.
And that’s what makes this so unfair.
After everything, Chucky is now battling congestive heart failure. His belly is filled with fluid. He moves slowly. He takes his time. He is only about 5 years old, and he should have so much more time ahead of him.
He should have years of snacks, naps, yard sniffs, cuddles, and people telling him he is the handsomest boy in the world.
Instead, this sweet dog has been robbed over and over again.
Robbed by whatever happened before we met him.
Robbed by months in a kennel.
Robbed of the easy, ordinary life every dog deserves.
And now, just when he finally has an incredible foster home and a foster momma who loves him so much, he is fighting for his life.
Life is not fair.
But what we can do, what we always try to do, is make sure the dogs who have been failed by life are not failed by us too.
Chucky is getting the care he needs because our friends at All About the Dogs Rescue said yes to him. They said yes when he was complicated. They said yes when he needed training. They said yes when he needed medical care. And they are still saying yes now.
We love you, Chucky. We are so sorry life has been so unfair to you. And we are so grateful that, for whatever time you have, you are finally surrounded by people who see you, love you, and know you were always worth fighting for.
