Last night's photo adventure resulted in some of my favorite moonset images I've ever captured. Within 30 minutes of sunset, the sky would darken just enough for the 1.5% illuminated waxing crescent moon to become visible. This time of year, the fingernail moon sets far to the northwest, so I figured a lineup with the 3,862-foot summit of Jay Peak would be likely. I headed up to Irasburg in Vermont's Northeast Kingdom, a location with an excellent view of the mountain; enjoyed a gorgeous spring sunset; and waited for dusk to arrive. About 25 minutes after the sun dipped below the distant ridge, the tiniest glimmer of lunar surface pierced the heavens. I took dozens of photos as the moon descended, but I think this one — taken exactly one hour after sunset with the full lunar disk faintly visible directly above Jay Peak Resort's summit tram station — is the pick of the litter. For the curious, this is a single exposure with the following specs: 1/2 second, 500mm, f/7.1, ISO 800.
