Scrolling through social media I just came across a post about off leash dogs approaching you with several suggestions to carry. Which made me think what you’d look like on the trails.
In my experience the best thing you can do is put your own dog in a sit stay behind you. (Practice this regularly on every walk, whenever you see another person/dog.)
Carry an extra leash. Wear it like a cross body bag you’ll barely notice it. It’s easy to get to and have ready. Firmly tell the oncoming dog to “SIT”. Sounds random but most dogs learn the command sit. Also, your dog will hear it and hold their position. Chances are the random loose dog will think “you’re not my mom/dad” and retreat. If not start spinning your extra leash like a pinwheel to create space if needed. Use the leash in any way possible to keep the dog away from you and your dog.
What ever you choose realize your dog might freak out. Besides another bulky item to carry an Air horn, can of rocks, umbrella, anything unusual that might scare off a dog will probably also scare your dog if not properly conditioned.
Remember most dogs are not bad dogs, but there are a lot of struggling owners. If they’re out there with their dogs they are trying. While it’s annoying at times there are worse things. There’s a dog right now that only leaves their property to go to the vets.
