DogWalkingDC grew from something that was done out of enjoyment to something that was seen as a necessity. Statistics show that if animals are well taken care of and exercised, they are less likely to be destructive…which means they are less likely to end up in shelters.

Dog Bless The U.S.A

If you’re like most Americans, Memorial Day is the annual “summer kickoff” celebration where we honor our people soldiers AND fur-soldier heroes with American flags, food, parades and all sorts of pet-friendly fun. So grab your pooch and don’t forget the sunscreen for yourself. Here are a few reminders to make sure your day or weekend is great:

1) Don’t forget to hydrate - yourself AND your pooch. Make sure you have plenty of clean, cool water for both of you. And don’t forget a water bowl for your dog!

2) Be careful not to let your pooch eat too much people food at festivals and celebrations. Let guests, friends or family members lavish love on your pet, not greasy treats that could cause gastric distress or a bad case of pancreatitis. Or carry/set out some fur-kid friendly treats that people can give to him.

3) Lots of people and dogs love boating this time of the year. Don’t forget the doggie life-jackets!

4) Fireworks are NOT a pleasant experience for pooches. Many are terrified by them and fireworks is a #1 cause of lost pets each year. Make sure that your dog has a safe, secure place to “hide” where they can’t harm themselves, like a crate or a dark, quiet room.

5) If you plan on traveling without your pet, call us or visit us online to find the PAWfect way to pamper your pooch or kitty with our award-winning vacation pet sitting services.

Dog Bite Prevention Week (long post ahead!):

As a dog walking company we find these stats and tips very important!

*There are an estimated 70 million dogs living in U.S. households.

*Millions of people are bitten by dogs every year. There are many things you can do to avoid dog bites from your own fur-kids or other people’s pets. Simply understanding dog body language is a KEY to avoid dog bites.

Following are some signs that a fearful, anxious, afraid or aggressive dog may give:

An aggressive dog:
May try to make themselves look bigger.
Ears may be up and forward
Fur on her back and tail may stand on end or puff out
Tail may be straight up—it may even wag
May have a stiff, straight-legged stance
May be moving toward or staring directly at what she thinks is an approaching threat.
Bared teeth, growl, lunge or bark.

Continued approach toward a dog showing this body language could result in a bite!

An anxious or scared dog:
May try to make themselves look smaller
May shrink to the ground in a crouch
May lower their head,
May lip lick
Will tuck their tail between their legs
May flatten their ears back
Will yawn repeatedly
Will avoid direct eye contact
May stay very still or roll on their back and expose their stomach.
May try to turn away or slowly move away from what they think is an approaching threat.

The more you know!!

DogWalkingDC - Where Kindness Matters

JJ Scheele has made a career caring for animals. As owner of DogWalkingDC and former Program Director at Humane USA PAC she is committed to the well being of animals. She dedicates most of her times towards animal rescue, fostering, volunteering and being active in the animal welfare movement.

She grew up on the west coast and was always bringing home strays…and still to this day she can’t travel without finding something furry that needs to be rescued. Apparently she was meant to be a dog walker from an early age.

DogWalkingDC grew from something that was done out of enjoyment to something that was seen as a necessity. Statistics show that if animals are well taken care of and exercised, they are less likely to be destructive…which means they are less likely to end up in shelters.
