Dogs looooove peanut butter! For Peanut Butter Cookie Day, make your pooches a dog-friendly version that will have them smacking their chops! Mix 2 cups whole wheat flour, 1 cup old-fashioned oats, 1 cup peanut butter (Xylitol and sugar-free), and 1 1/2 cups hot water. Preheat oven to 350 degrees, place rack in middle and grease cookie sheets. Roll batter into 1" balls. Place 2" apart on cookie sheets. Dip a fork into flour and push down to flatten each ball. Bake at 350 degrees for 40 minutes.

Despite the fact they have a swimming style named after them, not all dogs are natural swimmers. The good news is, you can teach your dog to swim! Definitely use a life jacket for certain breeds and don't let puppies in water without a human holding them until they learn. Check water temp and keep swimming time to no more than 10 minutes at a time. Make it more fun by incorporating balls and floating toys!

Don't leave out your cat and dog friends on National Gingerbread Day! Ginger in small amounts can be good for our canine and feline buddies, but always check with your vet first before adding new ingredients to your pets' diets. Do not give your pet an entire tray of cookies! One as a treat, once in a while (just like any treat), will still make them happy! You can also freeze the dough for later use.

It's International Corgi Day! According to Welsh folklore, Welsh Corgi were employed to spirit away magical beings by pulling fairy coaches & carry fairy warriors into battle. They still have the imprint of a “fairy saddle” on their shoulders! The difference between a Pembroke Welsh Corgi & a Cardigan Welsh Corgi is the Pembroke’s tail is docked & the Cardigan sports a fox-like tail. Cardigans are also slightly larger than the Pembroke.

June is Adopt-a-Cat Month! The American Humane Society created this celebration of cats and adoption to try to clear out overcrowded shelters. So many kitties are waiting for their forever home, so visit a shelter and meet some of these adorable fluff balls! Don't forget the shy, older, and special needs cats. If you cannot have a pet of your own, consider volunteering for your local shelter!

Greyhounds are believed to be the oldest purebred dog breed, being depicted in prehistoric art! These hounds date back to Ancient Egypt roughly 5,000 years ago & were used by pharaohs for hunting. On average, Greyhounds can run 40-45 mph. They can run at 35 mph for about 7 miles. The fastest individual Greyhound is Shakey Jakey, who was clocked at 41.8 mph! It's International Sheltie Day! Their name is an homage to the land of the breed’s birth, the Shetland Islands of Scotland. Shelties have been known by several names over the years: Shetland Collie, Dwarf Scotch Shepherd, & Toonie Dog, which is an obsolete Scottish colloquialism for the word “farm.” Shelties are in the top 10 of smartest breeds!

The purpose of World Parrot Day, which is observed May 31 every year, is to bring to light conservation efforts of wild parrots and to educate people on responsible aviculture. Birds are a lot of work and involve a great deal of care, so make sure you understand all that is involved in properly caring for a parrot if you are thinking of adding one of these magnificent birds to your family!

The St. Bernard dog is named after St. Bernard of Montjoux & today is St. Bernard Day! Bernard became patron & protector of skiers because of his decades spent doing missionary work in the Alps. The hospice where dogs were & are bred is situated on a pass named after the monk on a route in the Alps separating Italy & Switzerland. The Saint Bernard was bred to help with search & rescue missions in this dangerous area!

On Memorial Day, we should honor all those who served our country. A military canine training program began in WWI but many other animals, such as horses, cats, mules, donkeys, camels, monkeys, and pigeons have served alongside our service persons!

If your pets have a fave bed or blankie, cleaning bedding at least every two weeks helps not only pets but humans as well because it eliminates bacteria! Wash more if anyone, including pets, has allergies or if the pets shed a lot. Machine wash beds with unscented detergent on hot, assuming the fabric can handle it, & dry based on instructions on the tag. Vacuum it first to keep the machine from getting clogged. It's recommended to run an empty cycle after you wash pet bedding or toys to clean the washer before running human laundry. Add bleach to the empty cycle to effectively clean it out.

Today is International Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Day! The breed's moniker was inspired by King Charles II, who was besotted by the breed. The most common coat color is chestnut & white fur known as Blenheim; black & tan members of the breed often have beige fur on their eyebrows; dogs who are head-to-toe chestnut are referred to as Ruby Cavaliers; & Tricolor are black & white with tan highlights. A flat face denotes a King Charles Spaniel, while a muzzle indicates a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.

National Rescue Dog Day is observed every May 20th to bring awareness to the countless number of amazing dogs in shelters who deserve a second chance at a forever home! If you are unable to add a new canine family member, most rescue organizations need foster homes (they pay all expenses) and volunteers!
