Why do some dogs lose their minds over booties but accept raincoats without question?

Kobe: booties? Sure why not.

Maple: I would rather lose a toe than wear footwear.

But raincoats? Slipped them on, walked out the door, didn’t think about it again. Same dogs. Same walk. Same Capitol Hill rain. One piece of gear is a nonstarter, the other is fine. Why??

This past weekend soaked the Hill, and now we’re heading into a dry stretch. Which feels like the right moment to appreciate the dogs who tolerated their rain gear and gently roast the ones who didn’t.

If you have a bootie-tolerant dog, congratulations, you’ve won the lottery. The rest of us are out here doing the post-walk paw check by hand and pretending we meant to do it that way.

Capitol Hill dog parents, where do you land? Team booties, team barefoot, or team “I bought the booties but they live in a drawer now”?

On a chaotic day like today on Capitol Hill, your presence is the whole walk.

The treats help. The familiar voice helps. But mostly it is just you, beside them, being the calm in the middle of all of it.

Most dogs on the Hill are managing a lot right now. The parade. The crowds. The street energy that does not really settle until evening. Some dogs handle it without blinking. Others just need their person to show up, slow down, and stay close.

You are enough. On the hard days, just being there is enough.

Happy Memorial Day from Capitol Hill. Grateful for everyone who made it possible to just walk a quiet street with a good dog.

Rolling to Remember is done for the day. And after days of rain, we almost, almost saw the sun!

For Capitol Hill dogs, that was a lot to process in one Sunday. The motorcycles. The National Memorial Day Concert (and dress rehersal!) on the Capitol grounds. Your dog felt all of it before you did and has been working through it since morning.

Here’s what actually helps tonight.

Let them decompress. No big walks, no new stimulation, no busy environments. If they want to be close to you, let them. If they want to be quiet in their spot, let them do that too. All of it is normal.

A frozen Kong or a snuffle mat gives them something slow and calming to work through if they are still a little wound up.

And tomorrow morning, before the Memorial Day parade gets going, get out early. Before 7am if you can. The quiet blocks east of Lincoln Park will be at their calmest in that window. Give them the good walk before the holiday energy builds again.

They did great today. Memorial Day weekend on Capitol Hill is a lot. They handled it.

How is your dog doing tonight?

Why Capitol Hill dogs struggle on Memorial Day weekend more than dogs anywhere else in DC.

It’s not just the holiday. It’s the geography. We live at the center of it. Motorcades on Pennsylvania Avenue. Motorcycles heading toward the Mall on Sunday, whose sound your dog picks up from four times farther away than you can hear them. Monday’s parade on Barracks Row. The crowd energy that turns our quiet little haven into canine sensory overload for 72 hours.

And this year there’s one more thing. The puddles.

Washington DC just had its driest start to a year in 132 years. Our first serious rain of the season is hitting right now and everything that built up on these brick sidewalks is collecting in that water. Grossness like motor oil, pesticides, animal waste, and leftover salt residue. Your dog wants to drink every puddle they find this weekend. Please redirect them every single time.

Here’s what will actually help an overly alert dog on the Hill this weekend. Early morning before 7am. Hitting the blocks east of Lincoln Park, which stay quieter longer. And the rain today is genuinely working in your favor. Thinner crowds, quieter streets, cooler air. A dog who carries stress does better in this weather than on a sunny holiday weekend.

Take the good walk today. The noise is coming.

Kobe just finished a 15 minute walk around Capitol Hill.

He didn't go far. And he didn't need to.

With temperatures climbing into the 90s this week, a longer walk in the heat isn't doing your dog any favors. A decompression walk where your dog sets the pace and follows their nose is more mentally tiring, more calming, and a whole lot kinder to their body right now.

Dr. Dan Teich of District Veterinary Hospitals explains why. Dogs have up to 300 million scent receptors compared to our 5 to 6 million. That fire hydrant your dog won't stop sniffing? That's not a delay. That's the whole walk.

Does your dog get enough time to really sniff?

You walk your dog walker.

On a decompression walk in Capitol Hill, the dog leads. That’s not a mistake. That’s the whole point.

No pace to keep. No route to follow. Wherever he wants to go, we go. Because a decompression walk isn’t about covering ground. It’s about letting your dog move through the world on his own terms, sniff what he wants, and come home actually settled.

He’s not walking with us. We’re walking with him.

That’s what we do differently at Saving Fido. Sometimes what your dog needs is to be completely in charge. And that’s just right.

Happy Mother’s Day. You know who you are. And do does your dog! (Happy Mother’s Day to all the 2-legged moms too. We love you all!)

Most people hire a dog walker and cross their fingers. I get it. It’s hard to know what you’re even looking for. Nobody teaches you this stuff. But there are three questions that cut through all of it. Ask them before you hand over a key. The answers will tell you everything. And if you’re on the Hill and already looking, link in bio.

It’s Dog Anxiety Awareness Week.

And honestly, the most anxious dogs I walk are often the ones whose owners feel the most helpless. Like they’ve tried everything and nothing works.

Sometimes what helps an anxious dog isn’t a tool or a trick. It’s a slow wander with no destination. Just letting them follow their nose wherever it goes.

What looks like meandering to us is everything to them. Think of it as their version of an hour at The Nail Saloon. Happiness and relaxation with no agenda. Just bliss.

That’s what a decompression walk is. And it changes things.

Capitol Hill friends — this one's worth a read. 🐾

We're in the middle of a heat wave, pollen is peaking, and DC is in a drought. That's a lot hitting your dog all at once!

Think about this: in just a few square inches of your dog's coat right now, there are hundreds of thousands of pollen grains. Every walk, they collect more. The moment your dog's tongue hits the water bowl — all of it goes in. Topping it off just mixes it around. Yuck, right?

The fix: Empty every one of your pup's water bowls. Wipe each one out. Refill each one fresh. Twice a day.

They deserve clean, fresh water. And that old bowl water? Your plants are thirsty too. Give them a drink.

Beat drought season, one bowl at a time with not one drop wasted.

Outsmart Pollen. Water the Garden. Refill Twice.

It’s National Wear Your Pajamas to Work Day AND National Animal Crackers Day. 🍪

Maple and Kobe have been in pajama mode since 6am. Meanwhile I was out working in 90°, in actual pants. Overachiever energy. 😄

Important question: which animal (cracker) is your pup?

Maple: lion. Kobe: giraffe. (And yes, Maple is literally wearing giraffe pajamas.) We didn’t even plan this. 🐾

Drop your dog’s animal cracker below in the comments!
