Sarah is a harlequin 4 year old female Great Dane who has been through so much at such a young age. She was leased out by a breeder who just saw her as money. She traveled the US giving birth to litter after litter ending up in California. Traveling back to Connecticut on a pig transport, she arrived covered in feces only to be washed off, bred one more time with a Shepherd and dumped on Craig's
list with her daughter. The people who got her had no idea how to raise a Dane and she was literally shoved in their car no questions asked along with her daughter. We worked with the family that took her in but they simply were not prepared for this girl. They did the right thing and surrendered her to GDRNE. We took her in to foster care with a very loving family where she was medically brought back to life. She had worms, was poorly fed and needed to put on some weight, had to relearn potty training (likely from being left outside much of her life) and learned to trust again. We found adopters to take her in but before she was transported she was to be spayed. During her spay a lump in her breast tissue was found. Eventually after going to the adopter it was confirmed - breast cancer. A portion of the lump was removed, she was spayed and we hoped that would be the end of her misery....sadly it was far from it. She went on to have an x-ray that revealed that she had been shot with buckshot. Yes you read that correctly - it remains embedded in her shoulder. After the adopters determined they could no longer care for her, she was moved to a core team member who now will never let her ever leave. We found out the worst news that she has bone cancer in her front left leg. Bone cancer. This girl has never caught a break but we intend to do for her, what none in her past have prior to coming to GDRNE, we intend to treat her to the best care possible no matter how long she remains with us. This is Sarah's story but so many are out there with this exact same story. In fact this one breeder has "dumped" over 6 dogs having gotten her use of them and we have to put them back together again mentally and physically. And in Sarah's case - we know no other Dane as sweet and no other more deserving. Please help - we will be posting her updates and fundraisers to help pay for her treatments.
