Say cheese! The horses got their annual check up and vaccinations with the vet today and we found that scooter needed a dental and once we sedated him we found out that that scooter has a tooth thatās in the wrong spot which maybe causing his top teeth to push outwards so he needed his teeth filed down first and now we have to ask a dental specialist if the odd tooth needs to be removed fun fact horses chew in a circular motion so it causes the teeth to wear down in the middle and not the sides the sides become more āspikedā and can cause holes and ulcers in their gums making it difficult to eat and loose weight so itās very important to have your horses teeth checked regularly some horses like young horses require twice a year dentals older horses require once a year or every 2 years for senior horses. Most veterinarians are trained in dental work or you can have a equine dentist come out our horses are under light sedation when preforming dentals this makes the horse relaxed so our vet can get way back into the mouth and get their back teeth also vets can age a horse by their teeth so if your horse doesnāt have papers proof of age the vet can tell a rough estimate of how old they are by their teeth you can also tell how old your horse is if their branded or tattooed and you can visibly see the brand for example Chester has a tattoo on his upper lip since he is a off the track thoroughbred and raced that tattoo is in a database so we can see his birthday and where he raced but sometimes the tattoo or brand is purposely altered so you canāt trace back so thatās why teeth are mostly the go to for age checking
