I love developing body control with these guys.
This was the first session practicing the sidepass in a square pattern with Bella.
She did so good!

Not everyone is fortunate enough to have access to an arena or round pen, so it’s important that my students learn how to handle their horses in all environments.
They worked on gaining respect and focus while improving their feel and timing on uneven, open terrain.
This was also a great opportunity for Janey and Dragon to trust and respect other handlers in an unfamiliar area. 🤗

Dragon had a rough start in life and had been trained with harsh methods that left a lasting impact.
Jayme Gaston bought him and she has poured her heart and soul into this horse.
He is a sweet boy, but has a strong personality and had a lot of baggage I had to work through.
He came here full of anxiety, with no patience, was extremely pushy, and had become unsafe to ride.
He carried himself hollowed out, head high, pulling through the bit and ridden in a solid shank as a last resort to correct his rearing.
He has learned to be soft and willing on the ground along with under saddle and is being ridden in a simple snaffle.
He has made so much progress and has turned into a gentle giant.

Even when it’s almost 90 degrees out, horses are still being trained, but I focus more on slow work and developing body control.
This is the first time I’ve asked Bella to work on side-passing.
When you get the basics down well enough, the advanced maneuvers should feel like puzzle pieces coming together.
If you find yourself struggling and your horse not understanding, or getting frustrated, usually you have a hole somewhere that needs to be fixed before moving on.

Bella has come so far in the two months that I've had her!
She was lacking so many important pieces in her foundation and had some bad habits I had to work through under saddle.
She used to be super stiff and heavy on the front end, would drop her shoulders constantly while turning, she had no concept of how to be soft and didn't know her leads at all.
She is now learning the beginnings of a spin, softly picks up the correct lead, and is cantering and guiding with minimal effort.
She has been so fun to bring along!

With it being cooler and windy today, I took Janey out to the big field to do ground work.
I wanted to see how she was going to handle everything.
She did so great that I decided to hop on!
I was not planning on riding her out there today with it being so windy, so that's why I didn't have the bridle. 😆 Kaity

After working in the arena, I cooled Janey out on a short trail ride.
Part of her training here will be working on getting her out as much as possible to continue building her confidence.
She showed me she was ready for it today, so I took it!

Janey originally came to me after her owner reached out for help and described her as a “ticking time bomb.”
Janey was already broke to ride but her owner had had an accident on her that resulted in a broken bone and she felt she wasn’t safe to ride without further training.
The first clip was my second saddling session with her.
I was not expecting her to break in half when I saddled her, but this bucking ended up being one of many sessions I had to work her through during the initial three months I had her.
She had many holes in her foundation along with pain from her back and hooves that had been unaddressed previously.
At the end of the initial three months, she was no longer bucking and had changed into a different horse, but to make sure pain was no longer an issue, she went home to rehab with continued care from her vet and farrier to get her on track to come back to me.
Today was my fourth session with her since returning earlier this week and my first ride on her.
What an incredibly rewarding journey it has been working with this special girl and her dedicated owner who refused to give up!

Here I'm working on the spin with Canyon.
He's on the lazier side and had a tendency to suck back too much, so to create forward motion, I trot circles while bending his rib cage around my inside leg. When he's soft and I'm ready to for him to step over, I take my inside leg off, lay the outside rein on and begin the spin.
If he decides to walk out of it, I just trot circles again. I make the spin the place of release and rest so that he begins to hunt for it on his own.

Canyon is doing amazing and making great progress!
He is collecting nicely, neck reining at all three gaits and beginning to learn how to spin!
Refinement and finishing is my favorite part of horse training.
