Management isn't giving up on training.

It's part of the training process.

If your dog gets too excited when guests come over, putting them behind a gate isn't failure. If your dog can't settle while you're working, giving them a Kong isn't failure. If your dog needs some extra space on a walk, creating that distance isn't failure.

Management gives your dog fewer opportunities to practice the behaviors you don't want while you work on teaching better ones.

And that's the goal: management today, more skills tomorrow.

In Real Life Manners, we practice those skills in the situations that actually come up at home and out in the world, from settling while you work to greeting people, walking around distractions, waiting around food, and more.

You don't have to choose between management and training. You can use both to help your dog succeed.

What happens when you’re trying to answer a work call, someone knocks on the door, you’re walking past another dog, or you’re trying to eat dinner without a dog in your lap? 😅

That’s what Real Life Manners is for.
In this class, we take the skills your dog knows and practice using them in situations that actually come up:
🐾 Staying settled while you’re working
🐾 Walking nicely around distractions
🐾 Checking in with you on walks
🐾 Greeting people without jumping
🐾 Waiting politely around food
🐾 Leaving dropped food alone
🐾 Staying on a mat while you eat
🐾 Coming when called
🐾 Passing other dogs calmly
🐾 Handling doorbells, visitors, and everyday distractions

It’s not about having a dog who performs a perfect sit in the living room. But having a dog who knows what to do when life gets busy.
If you’ve ever thought, “My dog knows this... they just don’t do it when I need them to,” this is the class for you.

Real Life Manners
📍 Saturdays at 11:30 AM

Come practice the skills that make living with your dog easier, more enjoyable, and a whole lot less frustrating. DM us for the link to sign up!

Maybe they chewed your shoe after you left the house.
Maybe they had an accident after you got home late.
Maybe they barked the second you got on a work call.
It’s easy to feel like they’re trying to get back at you.
But dogs don’t think that way.
They aren’t plotting revenge or trying to teach you a lesson. Their behavior is driven by what they’re feeling and what they’ve learned works in the past.
Instead of asking, “Why is my dog doing this to me?” try asking, “What is my dog trying to tell me?”
Are they anxious?
Overstimulated?
Frustrated?
Bored?
Confused about what’s expected?
When we stop viewing behavior as spite and start looking for the reason behind it, training becomes much more effective. We can address the root cause instead of just reacting to the symptom.

When most people think of puppy class, they think of the basics.
Sit. Down. Stay.
Those are important, but they’re only a small part of what we’re trying to accomplish.
At Great Start Puppy, we’re focused on raising dogs who are confident, curious, and prepared for the world around them. That means teaching puppies how to focus, recover from new experiences, enjoy being handled, settle, and build positive associations with everyday life.
Because the skills that matter most aren’t always the flashy ones.
A puppy who can stay calm, adapt to new situations, and look to you for guidance will have a strong foundation for everything that comes next.
Puppyhood goes by quickly, but the lessons they learn during this stage can last a lifetime. We’d love to help you give your puppy the best possible start.

Great Start Puppy class is open enrollment Saturdays at 10:30am and Tuesdays at 6pm. DM us to get started.

Does your dog suddenly seem like they've forgotten everything you taught them? 😅

If you're living with a teenage dog, you're not imagining it.

One day they come when called. The next day they're convinced every leaf, squirrel, and passing dog is more interesting than you.

Adolescence is a normal stage of development, and with it often comes more independence, bigger feelings, and a shorter attention span. It's frustrating, but it's also temporary.

The key isn't waiting for them to grow out of it. It's continuing to teach them how to make good choices, even when the world gets exciting.

That's exactly what Teenage Tyrants is all about. We'll help you navigate this stage with practical training, real-life skills, and plenty of support, so you can come out the other side with a dog you truly enjoy living with.

Teenagers may test your patience, but they can also become incredible adult dogs with the right guidance. Go to FreakOnALeashDogTraining.com to book your spot.

Myth: “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.”
We’ve all heard the saying, but it couldn’t be further from the truth.
Dogs are learning throughout their entire lives. Whether your dog is 6 months old or 10 years old, they’re capable of building new skills, forming new habits, and enjoying the process of training.
In fact, many older dogs make wonderful students. They often have longer attention spans, settle more easily between exercises, and genuinely enjoy having a job to do.
Is it possible that learning might look a little different than it does with a puppy? Absolutely. Every dog learns at their own pace.
But if you’ve been thinking, “I wish I had started training sooner,” don’t let that stop you from starting now.
The best time to begin was yesterday. The next best time is today.
Your dog is never too old to learn something new, and you might be surprised by just how much they enjoy it.
