Happy 4th of July 🇺🇸 ❤️ 🤍 💙 🎆 Here are some great tips to keep your horses safe during the fireworks 🎇

Fireworks can be fun and beautiful, but for horses, they can also be terrifying. Even the calmest of horses can be frightened by the bright lights and thundering booms of fireworks displays.

Our feel good story for the day🙂
Remember the feral horse with the halter embedded in her face? She was the one that we had to capture in the woods with animal control back in September. Well I received an update and apparently she has healed and is doing well in her new home👏🏻😊
In case you missed it you can scroll back to September for the full story. Here are her before and after pictures. I’m so happy she found a good home!

DO YOU KNOW WHAT CAUSES GRASS FOUNDER?

Spring is a wonderful time of the year, but it may be the beginning of some serious problems for horses vulnerable to grass founder — like horses that are over the age of 10, easy keepers, overweight or cresty-necked.

Laminitis or founder, as it is commonly called, is inflammation of the laminae of the horse’s foot. Laminae are the delicate, accordion-like tissues that attach the inner surface of the hoof wall to the coffin bone (the bone in the foot). A horse suffering from laminitis experiences a decrease in blood flow to the laminae, which in turn begin to die and separate. The final result is hoof wall separation, rotation of the coffin bone and extreme pain. In severe cases, the coffin bone will actually rotate through the sole of the horse’s hoof where it becomes infected and can ultimately lead to the horse having to be euthanized.

Laminitis can be triggered by different causes, like repeated concussion on hard ground (road founder), grain overload, retained placenta, hormonal imbalance (Cushing’s syndrome), obesity, and lush grass.

In cases of grass founder, the sugar fructans produced by rapidly growing grass stimulates an overgrowth of bacteria in the horse’s large intestine. The bacteria produce and release toxins (endotoxins) that are carried by the bloodstream to the foot where they cause damage to the laminae and small blood vessels.

The best way to deal with laminitis is preventing and managing the causes under your control. Consult your equine practitioner for further information and to formulate a plan tailored to your horse's individual situation. If you suspect laminitis, consider it a medical emergency and notify your veterinarian immediately.

UPDATE:

Dear Valued Clients and Friends,

As many of you know, I took a full time regulatory position with the Louisiana State Racing Commission which will start in April. I have been doing relief work at the tracks since October. I will be working the Thoroughbred and QH meets at Evangeline and will fill in at the Fairgrounds during off season. As I absolutely LOVE private practice, I needed some flexibility in my work schedule to deal with aging parents (and the fact that my mind thinks I’m 20 but my body disagrees😂).
I also realize the absolute shortage of equine veterinarians in our area so I will still be practicing when I’m not at the track. Something had to give, and sadly it was the large amount of reproductive work that I was doing. I will still be available for routine work and some select repro cases.
I am in the process of figuring how to make it all work, but so far, it’s been pretty smooth.
With that said, I am currently looking for any of the following:
*an equine vet looking for part time work
*an equine vet who wants to start their own practice (repro or performance is in demand)
*an equine performance veterinarian that wants to work a couple of days a week.
*a young vet who eventually wants to own a business
Or any other ideas to keep this area with top notch service!
Please PM with any questions.
And I appreciate every single one of you!

I also enjoyed my time back in New Orleans 🎭⚜️
