I'd always had two separate pages for training content. Snowbound kennels for working retrievers, flushing and pointing dogs and this page for my companion dog content.

Going forward I'm just going put all my content on the Snowbound Kennels page but this page (Snowbound Kennels Pet Training) will remain with the great many videos of a wide variety of breeds that I've worked with successfully in recent years.

Some free shaped , some luring and some rewarding.

Nine-year-old Roscoe is transitioning to the electric collar and I try to indicate activation by holding my right hand up when I'm activating.

Not the best of that because I'm focusing more on training him than letting people know when I'm activating by raising and lowering my arm but you can clearly see, with how I transition, Roscoe is totally happy.

A lot of trainers would have their dogs on a leash to keep them from "checking out" but I'm fine not doing that when I work on the apron of the kennel because they generally want to stay on the apron and if they're imperfect it gives me the opportunity to mark/reward and possibly activate as they come back to me.

Lots of different programs for different dogs. Some start like Roscoe here and other dogs would be more traditional and on a leash learning heel, sit then recall while other dogs learn recall, sit and then heel.

Not one program with me, whatever program works best for an individual dog is my approach and that's why I have several different approaches.

One size does not fit all.

Another trainer said they tried my system and it didn't work.

Well, how come it's worked with me and approximately 1200 dogs and doesn't work for them?

Either they don't understand my systems or they're applying it incorrectly.

Or, they're just applying it very mechanically and not in the organic nature you need to for each dog.

And my training protocol continues to evolve every week.....

And while I'm at it, if any professional trainer tells you with they "don't recommend" an electric training collar or believe they are an abusive tool and would never use one I can guarantee one thing with 100% certainty.

They don't know how to use one correctly, they have used one incorrectly, they have seen one used incorrectly or they're just following the lemmings off the cliff based on assumptions from like-minded people in real life or online.

If someone chooses to not use one in training and they understand the incredible benefits of proper use and don't disparage electric collar, that's fine by me, I could care less whether someone uses them or not.

But, the people that "don't recommend them" or disparage them, they just don't know how to use them correctly and their insecurity doesn't allow them to admit that to their clients.

I literally have personal experience with a professional trainer that didn't know how to use them, ask if they could get help understanding how to use them, never avail themselves of that opportunity and yet with one of the fanciest facilities in the state of Vermont tell people to not use them.

I wish I was making this up but I'm not.

In another case someone attended a seminar of mine about electric collars and has told people that my system doesn't work because it didn't work for them.

How is it possible that my system is worked on virtually every dog I've ever trained over 37 years but not for them?

The only possible answer is they didn't understand the information or they're applying at incorrectly.

It can't work for me and not someone else unless they didn't understand or they aren't doing it correctly. There's no possible other answer.

But, egos getting in the way and God forbid someone admits that they don't know everything because that would be crushing to their frail ego and how do you possibly admit to your clients that you don't know something about a training tool?

And you know it's ideology not factual. I literally have people who visit me for training help that can't let their regular training partners know they have been here because they will be ostracized if not outright banned from the training group because they came here for information on electric collar.

I know someone who when their training group learned from them they were using an electric collar was excluded from the training group.

That is so incredibly narrow minded and ridiculous I don't even know what to say.

I have never, never heard of a training group that used electric collars that banned someone because they didn't want to use them!

Much easier to disparage then to admit ignorance and become educated.

Observing what's going on in the world of dog training and professional dog trainers these days just boggles my mind. Incredible advancements in training, training tools and methodology are easily and widely available but I see taken as a whole, dog training and many professionals involved in it, are a massive train wreck and unfortunately it's to the detriment of dogs. Things aren't getting better, things are getting worse and they're getting worse driven by ideology not facts.

If anyone with an opposing view wants to have a face-to-face discussion with me because they hold a different opinion, I'm always available for that conversation.

Man is frustrating.

Sully, the miniature Labradoodle, happily demonstrates my failed training protocol and how damaging training a dog with an electric collar actually is.🤷🏼‍♂️

I used to be a little more diplomatic and not quite as straight to the point on this topic as I have been for sometime.

The whole idea of "I love my dog so much I can't send it away to be trained."

Well, you're being selfish because if you loved your dog you would let it be trained so your dog could have a better life.

But no, you love it so much you won't let it be trained so it's gonna spend the rest of his life pulling on a leash, reactive in proximity to whatever is reactive over and certainly not ever allowed to run free off leash where it's safe to do so.

But, by all means you love your dog and that's the life your dog will lead because of you.

Sorry, harsh but true.

If you truly love your dog you would want it to live its best life and to live it's the best life it may have to spend a little time away from home.....

Part of the current crew here this morning. Not all of the dogs go out together but the majority here right now are safely social.

Maxx (my dog) clearly doesn't wanna share his Goose decoy head and everyone knows that. Toys in the exercise yard are super well monitored as they can cause schoolyard disagreements.

Jess, first day off leash....

Like I hear from so many owners, "she's great 90% of the time."

You know that 10% of the time that dogs aren't great? That's the 10% of the time we really need them to come, to heel and to sit with duration.

Over $140 a day in my greater area for a board and train program!🤯🤯

Seriously?

It's actually pretty funny because now and then I will get contacted via Facebook messenger by someone pretending to be interested in my training program but obviously it's another trainer trying to get information and what I charge.

The snowboundkennels.com website doesn't have any rate information as I actually like to speak with people on the phone or in person, explain the training program and the cost they might expect to achieve the training goals they have for their dog.

Because I've trained such a wide variety of disciplines, such a wide variety of dog breeds and have over 33 years of actual experience, I know dogs don't prosper in some cookie cutter time defined program.

It's been decades since I actively advertised and virtually all of my business is word-of-mouth referrals from other clients but I do occasionally have someone find me through a random Google search.

So here you go, people can see what I charge, my experience, my training guarantee and unlimited lifetime consultations at no charge after I work with your dog.

My companion dog program which encompasses all breeds and any behavioral issues including dogs with a bite history:

$2250 a month

Gun dog/hunting dog competition is beyond the scope of this page but the universal companion Dog program will have the dog happily off leash where it is safe and coming when called even at a distance around great distractions. Those same dogs will go into town where they work in that environment covering loose leash heeling in businesses such as Agway and tractor supply. They also work out in town on the sidewalks in proximity to pedestrians, strollers, bicycles, other dogs and also learn to sit with duration at a coffee shop watching the world go by.

Backing up to the end of a long line while my dog sits in Home Depot to demonstrate obedience isn't something I would use to promote my training skills. They need real world compliance around high-level distractions.

Getting them to do that really isn't a problem for some trainers but getting them to do that ears forward, tail up and happy? That's a different story.

I work on a 30 day month, there's no charge for the day a dog arrives, no charge for the day the dog goes home and no additional charge for the work we do together transitioning the dog back to you so we're all on the same page.

The owners go home with a plan to maintain, a plan to advance and those unlimited lifetime consultations at no charge.

$2250 for 30 days on my incredibly private 100 acre property at the end of our 1/2 mile long driveway where the experience for dogs is like summer camp, not Boot Camp. The socialization they get in the always supervised exercise yard could be a profoundly beneficial experience for many dogs especially those who arrive quite reactive to other dogs.

So by all means, take a look at what other trainers are charging per day, per month, per week all based on some timeframe program because dogs certainly understand the clock and the calendar and will always train appropriately around those.

And yeah, that's $75 a day, almost half of what some trainers are charging and I'm not even going to talk about the $4000 four week program offered in Vermont..🤯

Thanks for reading.

Vinny learning a little sit duration with a distraction.

Clearly he's like, why can't I go play with Venus?

Start slowly, build length of duration compliance and gradually add distractions keeping in mind that distractions are frequently distance related.

I was recently talking to someone who clearly was ideologically centered in the "force free" camp of dog trainers.

I say ideologically because frankly I could care less if someone wants to trained totally "force free" as long as I believe there's some semblance of rational, critical and logical thought about the choices they are making.

Clearly this person had embrace that ideology and being open to learning any other training protocol was obviously not of any interest.

So many people across the dog training spectrum are where they are because of ideology not facts.

Maybe I'm just different but I find facts more interesting than ideology.
