I've noticed the option on AQHA registrations "roan sock" but have never seen one before.

Well...I didn't notice it on this guy at all last year (so it's not noted on his registration), but now it's just as loud and obvious as can be!! A roan sock!!

The mare line on this guy has shown me all sorts of crazy, cool things over the years! Cheers to a new one for me!! 🤓🥳

Everyone is asking "what is rabicano, I've never heard of it," so here are a few examples from our ranch 🤠

Rabicano is a roan-like color variation. There is no test for it, so it's unclear what gene or genes causes it. There is a range of expression from very minimal (white hairs in the flanks, shoulder pocket, body) to nearly roan looking with full body white hairs and "skunk barring" on the tail head (key trait).

It's present in our thoroughbreds and is called "roan body hairs" on the registrations. In our quarter horses it is rarely noted on registration papers unless it's in combination with true roan.

Like many color variations, we didn't know a ton before DNA color testing became a thing. I think many people thought it was roan and made crosses with roan horses trying to get homozygous roan foals or higher probability of roan foals (2 heterozygous roan horses crossed with eachother have a 75% chance of producing a roan foal, 1 heterozygous roan horse has a 50% chance of passing the trait to the foal).

So keep your eyes peeled, if you see a roan horse, but the tail head has barring, there's rabicano in there 🤓

When he was born his legs were so light I thought for sure he was a bay dun, but looking back, there was a very faint steel tint to them the first week or so. Also, with that big blaze I couldn't see what color his mask was. Anyway, my bad, GRULLA!

For 2 years I've been kind of kicking myself for selling the grulla filly Swift and Jack made the first time I crossed them. She was picture perfect but not homozygous for anything, so that was ultimately why I decided to let her go (she's in an amazing home in Montana btw 🥰).

Well...... not that I need to keep another boy horse 😬 and just like Jewels he's not homozygous for anything (never can be with this cross), but I did give him a really special-to-me registered name 🤔 and he's rabicano with a skunk tail, and he's dual registered so 🫠 I'm seriously thinking about just keeping this guy 😶

Cupid made it back home after being here for a month for breeding. Poor spoiled girl has the life out on that big, green...

These guys now have 3 yellow geldings all from the same cross 💛 I feel so lucky and blessed to have the most amazing friends and clients!! 🙏😇 and man if this old girl isn't still producing the sweetest foals I've ever met!

"Charlie" is the exact perfect combination of his dam and sire 😍 this guy!!! Check out that deep pretty shoulder, that long gaskin, and that racey croup paired with the cutest little head!!!!

He's just a foal, so who knows what his future has in store, but I would say barrel racing 🏁 with the size and build he has, there's really no limits but I'm voting fast!
