RIGBY NEEDS YOUR VOTE!

We want to introduce David Fritz, a long-time, dedicated client of VCAH and his dog, Rigby. Rigby has been selected by American Humane to be one of only five therapy dogs nationwide based on their internal review of hundreds of submissions. Now she is a finalist in the therapy dog category and a semifinalist for the overall title of “Hero Dog”.

Rigby has earned Hero status with her volunteer service each Sunday over the past 6 years at the children’s hospital of New York Presbyterian Hospital-Columbia University Medical Center in Manhattan. Rigby and I are a Pet Partners certified pet therapy team and as her handler I can attest to the amazing and heartwarming interactions Rigby has with children hospitalized for serious and chronic illnesses, or awaiting transplants or courageously battling cancer, not to mention the families of the patients who spend countless days and hours there as well. Equally important is the attention and affection she gives the doctors and nurses on the floors we visit and especially in the ICU’s where caring for critically ill young and infant patients is often stressful.

“This is my 16th years as a volunteer at NYP-CUMC, having made weekly visits with my beloved Cassie (also a golden retriever) whose 10 years of service at NYP-CUMC was so remarkable that the hospital produced a video of her (“A Day in the Life of a Therapy Dog”) and made an appearance on Good Morning America.”

American Humane partners with FEMA, state and local first responders and local animal rescue organizations to locate, recover and shelter lost or abandoned pets as a result of natural disasters. American Humane also provides animal protection in instances of cruelty and neglect, puppy mill closures, military dog reunification with their handlers and “No animals were harmed” motion picture certification.

You can vote once each day for each day while the voting is open between now and September 15th.

As a reminder, summer heat can be dangerous for pets, especially dogs with short snouts like Bulldogs, Pugs, and Frenchies.

Watch for signs of overheating like excessive panting or drooling, bright red gums, wobbling, or vomiting. If you notice these signs, get your pet to a cool area, offer water, and call us immediately.
