May was Mental Health Awareness Month!

Did you know veterinary medicine has one of the highest su***de rates of a medical profession? Compassion fatigue is the most common term our professionals deal with. It is recognized amongst all levels of vet med: from the kennel tech quietly caring for every animal boarding to the customer service rep who gets yelled at through the phone daily to the DVM who takes the cases home mentally every night trying to decide what they could’ve done better. We do our best to set boundaries for our team and check in with everyone to prevent compassion fatigue, but it’s not always easy. We didn’t get into this profession for money, we came for our compassion for caring for pets.

You may have seen our team a bit out of uniform this week as we relaxed and recognized this month ā¤ļø. Just simple reminders to be kind to your brain!

Equine clients! The smoke is going to continue linger for a while, and hot spot re-ignition is possible. It is still important to stay prepared!
If you feel you need to evacuate- bc you’ve been told to or your horse isn’t handling the air quality well, there are some available locations! Remember to call ahead.
As always, Dr. Ali and Dr. C are available for exams as needed if you have any concerns!

🚨 Wildfire Evacuation & Your Pets: Don’t Wait Until It’s Too Late 🐾

When evacuation orders come, you may only have minutes to act. Having a plan for your pets can make all the difference.

Be prepared BEFORE you need to go:
• Pack a pet ā€œgo-bagā€ (3–7 days of food, water, medications, records)
• Keep a leash, carrier, and ID tags easily accessible
• Microchip your pet and ensure info is up to date
• Know where you can go—pet-friendly hotels, shelters, or friends/family
- Check trailer tire pressure now and position trailer for easy loading.

When it’s time to evacuate:
• Take your pets with you—never leave them behind
• Keep pets secured (leash or carrier at all times)
• Stay calm—your pets will pick up on your energy
• Follow official evacuation routes and guidance

Quick tip: If it’s not safe for you, it’s not safe for them.

Planning ahead isn’t just helpful—it can save lives.

šŸ”„ Wildfire Smoke & Your Pets: What You Need to Know 🐾

Even if fires are miles away, the smoke can still impact your pet’s health.

Why it matters:
Wildfire smoke contains tiny particles that can irritate your pet’s lungs and airways—especially in dogs and cats with underlying conditions.

Watch for these signs:
• Coughing or gagging
• Red or watery eyes
• Nasal discharge
• Fatigue or decreased activity
• Difficulty breathing (this is an emergency 🚨)

How to protect your pets:
• Keep pets indoors as much as possible
• Limit walks and outdoor playtime
• Close windows and run air conditioning if available
• Avoid strenuous activity outside
• Provide plenty of fresh water
• Consider air purifiers if smoke is heavy

High-risk pets include:
• Short-nosed breeds (like Bulldogs, Pugs)
• Senior pets
• Puppies and kittens
• Pets with heart or lung disease

If your pet is showing any concerning symptoms, don’t wait—reach out to your veterinary team right away.

šŸ« Chocolate: Without a doubt, a delicious treat for humans…

But for our canine friends, it can be dangerous. Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, which can lead to toxicity in dogs.

Severity depends on the type of chocolate ingested, and the size of the dog:

āš ļø Watch for these signs, typically 6-12 hours following ingestion:
• Vomiting
• Restlessness or agitation
• Increased heart rate
• Hyperthermia (fever)
• Seizures

If your dog gets into chocolate, don’t wait — contact your veterinarian right away. When it comes to chocolate and pets, it’s always better to be safe than sorry!
