FAQS & PAGE POLICIES
This page is managed and maintained by volunteers supporting the Prince George’s County MD Animal Shelter, the animals under the shelter’s care, and the community the shelter serves. 📞 Holds: We cannot place a hold on animals through this page. You must contact the shelter directly at 301-780-7200 or, better yet, go to the shelter in person.
⏳ Urgency: All animals have short required hold times. With the ongoing volume entering the shelter, every animal should be considered extremely urgent. Animals are not safe until it is confirmed on this page that they have left the shelter.

However, we have not personally met every dog and cannot guarantee the completeness of every detail posted. Fosters and adopters must ask questions, meet the dog, and decide if the animal is the right fit for their home.

We always hate to see a discarded momma dog! Magnolia is a big ol mama girl and she deserves a retirement where she just gets to be a dog. Her picture hardly does her justice but take our word for it, she’s a cutie!

🚨 URGENT: MAGNOLIA MUST LEAVE BY TUESDAY, 6/9 at 6 PM 🚨

Please arrive at least 1 hour before closing to meet her!

🐾 Meet Magnolia 🩷 (A569461)
🗓️ 4 years old • ♀️ Female • ⚖️ 78 lbs

Magnolia.

Now that's a Southern belle name if I've ever heard one.

And this Magnolia certainly knows how to make an entrance. With her bright smile, expressive eyes, and stunning glossy coat, she's impossible to miss.

🐶 Magnolia appears to have been a mama dog at some point, and it's hard not to wonder if that experience helped shape her outlook on life. Anyone who has ever wrangled a group of energetic youngsters knows that sometimes you have to be a little bossy to keep everyone moving in the right direction!

While we don't know much about Magnolia's life before arriving at the shelter, we do know she's spent more than a month waiting for someone to notice her.

🐾 Playgroup Notes

Magnolia participated in shelter playgroup and was described as steerable and semi-engaged. Staff also noted that she could be a bit dominant and occasionally over-correct other dogs.

It's possible Magnolia prefers to be the one setting the rules—or perhaps she's simply carrying some of those mama-dog instincts with her. As always, dogs often show different sides of themselves once they're out of the shelter environment.

✨ Please note: The shelter can be a stressful and overwhelming place, and a dog's behavior here may not fully reflect how they will continue to develop once they feel safe and settled in a home.

06/07/2026

Poor Esquire has already undergone more than any dog should, having had an embedded collar and some other possible leg injury. Spending months in the shelter as a puppy hasn’t helped him learn his manners. But despite it all, he’s a happy boy just hoping for a second chance.

🚨 URGENT: ESQUIRE MUST LEAVE BY TUESDAY, 6/9 at 6 PM 🚨

Please arrive at least 1 hour before closing to meet him!

🐾 Meet Esquire 🩷 (A566561)
🗓️ 9 months old • ♂️ Male • ⚖️ 51 lbs

With a name like Esquire, you might expect a distinguished gentleman in a suit and tie.

The reality? Esquire is a wiggly, happy puppy who seems much more interested in grass, adventure, and making up for lost time. How a 9 month old pup finds himself on the urgent list is beyond me...

One volunteer recently spent time with Esquire and shared the following observations:

"I was planning on meeting Esquire anyway, but expedited our interaction because an approved foster with the shelter came to see him and wanted me to bring him out.

He is a wiggly, happy puppy and has some soft tissue injury or discomfort in his left front leg, which he holds up every once in a while while he’s walking and when he sits in his kennel. Because of his injury he is not able to be walked by volunteers and I only was able to take him out a short distance to interact with his foster.

He really didn’t seem deterred at all by his leg, mostly using it along with the other legs and with puppy-who-has-been-kenneled-for-many-months levels of energy. He was happy to catch up on the smells outside, ignoring me and the prospective foster initially in his excitement to be outside and touching grass.

Esquire was a little jumpy as would be expected for a young puppy who has been kenneled for a long time, but he settled well when I asked him to and he was never mouthy. He wasn’t super interested in my treats but took a few when they were offered.

He mostly just wanted to be outside and get attention for the first time in a long time."

🐾 Dog-to-Dog Notes

Other volunteers have introduced Esquire to other dogs and reported that he was enthusiastically playful with every dog he met.

Because he's still a young pup, volunteers believe he may do well in a home with another confident dog who can help him catch up on all the dog things he may have missed while growing up in the shelter and help him adjust to life in a home.

✨ Please note: The shelter can be a stressful and overwhelming place, and a dog's behavior here may not fully reflect how they will continue to develop once they feel safe and settled in a home.

Eraser has a silly name and goofy face to match it, but he is a beautiful Merle and has great playgroup notes! Don’t let his kennel presence deter you - he’s being overlooked for his frustration and barking but having been there for over two months, including a long stint in ISO where he didn’t leave a kennel for weeks, who can blame him!

🚨 URGENT: ERASER MUST LEAVE BY TUESDAY, 6/9 at 6 PM 🚨

Please arrive at least 1 hour before closing to meet him!

🐾 Meet Eraser 🩷 (A568502)
🗓️ 3 years old • ♂️ Male • ⚖️ 55 lbs

Most erasers are designed to help things disappear.

This Eraser is doing everything he can to make sure he isn't forgotten.

One volunteer spent time getting to know Eraser and shared the following observations:

"Eraser is a stunning boy who wants to make sure that he isn’t forgotten. He’s barky in his kennel, but just because he’s been passed by so many times that he wants to make sure that he isn’t missing out on a walk. Eraser is easy to leash up and definitely knows the way to the exit, he pulls me all the way there.

Once we are outside, I understand his barking and persistent jumping. Eraser is house trained. I always hesitate to say this definitively UNLESS the dog has a totally clean kennel and uses the bathroom more than twice on a walk. Eraser pooped three times while we were out so falls into the 'has definitely been holding it in the hopes that he got a walk that day' category.

Eraser knows 'sit', 'wait' and 'here' cues and has the signs of a dog who is frustrated over his long stay (and lack of appropriate potty breaks!) but has also had a prior life that likely included some training and a family who took the time to work with him.

He’s young, energetic and not thriving in the shelter but also not falling apart at the seams either."

🐾 Playgroup Notes

Eraser previously participated in shelter playgroup in the Rough and Rowdy group. His notes describe him as steerable, tolerant, able to take corrections, and playful at times.

He has also been noted as sexually motivated, which can be a common stress response in the shelter environment and may improve with decompression, time away from the shelter, and neutering.

✨ Please note: The shelter can be a stressful and overwhelming place, and a dog's behavior here may not fully reflect how they will continue to develop once they feel safe and settled in a home.

How has nobody scooped up Ri Ri?! Her eyeliner is on point and she’s the perfect age - true adulthood, easy living and a happy girl that will be so grateful to be in a home!

🚨 URGENT: RIRI MUST LEAVE BY TUESDAY, 6/9 at 6 PM 🚨

Please arrive at least 1 hour before closing to meet her!

🐾 Meet Riri 🩷 (A568893)
🗓️ 6 years old • ♀️ Spayed Female • ⚖️ 63 lbs

🎵 Shine bright like a diamond... 🎵

Unlike her famous namesake, this Riri isn't looking for a sold-out stadium tour.

She's looking for a soft bed, a loving home, and someone who will finally give her the VIP treatment she deserves.

And honestly? Looking at those striking eyes and that perfectly posed photo, she already has star quality.

🐶 Riri is a 6-year-old girl who has been waiting at the shelter since April 13.

While we don't have many notes about her yet, we do know she's spent nearly two months watching people walk by her kennel, hoping one of them might stop and choose her.

At 63 pounds, Riri is well past the puppy stage but still has so much life and love left to share. Sometimes dogs her age get overlooked as people search for younger dogs, but many adopters will tell you that this is the sweet spot: old enough to be past the puppy chaos and young enough for plenty of adventures ahead.

Just look at her sitting so politely on her bed, patiently waiting for her next chapter to begin.

✨ Please note: The shelter can be a stressful and overwhelming place, and a dog's behavior here may not fully reflect how they will continue to develop once they feel safe and settled in a home.

🚨URGENT in MD🚨 SEVEN is a stunning, affectionate young girl who has done well in the gentle and dainty playgroup. But so far no one has taken a chance on her! She is looking for a foster or adapter ASAP! She is on an urgent list with 19 dogs and must leave the shelter by Tuesday, June 9 at 6 PM. Since the shelter is closed for adoptions on Sundays and Mondays, please come see her Saturday or Tuesday! Her life depends on it.

🚨 URGENT: SEVEN MUST LEAVE BY TUESDAY, 6/9 at 6 PM 🚨

Please arrive at least 1 hour before closing to meet her!

🐾 Meet Seven 🩷 (A568916)
🗓️ 3 years old • ♀️ Spayed Female • ⚖️ 54 lbs

Meet Seven: The Lucky Number You've Been Waiting For!

(And just to avoid confusion, this is Seven A568916—the adorable redhead with the giant ears and even bigger smile!)

Seven is currently one of the longest residents at the shelter, which honestly feels a little hard to believe.

Just look at that face.

🐶 The Lowdown on Seven

✨ The Shelter Life
To be transparent, kennel life gives Seven some major jitters. When you walk by, you'll often see her doing her best impression of an Olympic high-jumper, bouncing up to make sure she doesn't miss her chance to be noticed.

She's basically saying, "Hey! Over here! Pick me!"

✨ The Great Outdoor Plot Twist
The second Seven gets outside, everything changes.

The kennel energy disappears and her snuggle meter shoots straight to one hundred. She transforms into a total sweetheart who wants pets, treats, and quality time with her people.

✨ Playtime, Sort Of
Seven will happily chase a toy, but she seems to realize pretty quickly that tennis balls don't provide belly rubs.

Before long, she's right back beside you looking for affection instead.

✨ The Ultimate Good Girl
Seven knows "sit" and "come" and responds right away when asked. She also kept a clean kennel and pottied promptly once outside.

🐾 Playgroup Notes

Seven participates in the Gentle and Dainty playgroup and has been described as steerable, semi-engaged, nervous, curious, and tolerant of other dogs.

✨ Please note: The shelter can be a stressful and overwhelming place, and a dog's behavior here may not fully reflect how they will continue to develop once they feel safe and settled in a home.

Only one dog is safe so far — congratulations to Ocean! 🎉 That still leaves 18 precious lives hanging in the balance.

With this beautiful sunny weather, we hope you’ll consider making a trip to the shelter to meet your new best friend. We especially need adopters and fosters through rescue partners to step up for these dogs.

Please note there has been a slight change in policy, and not all dogs are currently eligible to foster through the shelter. For this urgent list, Maryland residents may foster the following dogs directly through the shelter’s Foster-to-Save program:

🐾 Tyson
🐾 Truffles
🐾 Seven
🐾 Chaos
🐾 Ozzy
🐾 Coco
🐾 Oakley

All other dogs on the list will need support through one of our rescue partners.

Please share, tag, foster, adopt, or pledge if you can. Every action helps. ❤️

Truffles.

Sweet, delightful, impossible to resist.

And just like the chocolate treat she's named after, she seems determined to make everyone around her happier.

One volunteer wasn't even planning to take Truffles out that day—until a shelter caretaker mentioned how much he loved her.

That's usually worth paying attention to.

After all, the people who spend every day caring for these dogs know them better than almost anyone.

As it turns out, Truffles absolutely lived up to the hype.

"She’s a pocket-sized ray of sunshine, with a grin a mile wide, a wiggly body and a dedication to bringing the party to any environment.

Truffles is wiggly and pulls on the leash, but just because she knows something fun is ahead of her!

She runs into the community room where the photoshoot is being held as if it’s the most exciting place in the world. She immediately engages both photographers in play, spinning and grinning and racing across the backdrop.

We must have taken a million photos that show her mile-wide grin, but the rest of her is just a blur because she was having too much fun for traditional poses.

Truffles is a dog for people who love to play with their dog, for people who want to do things with their dog that aren’t just cuddle on the couch.

She can do couch cuddles, of course. And lap cuddles. And kisses. And all of the sweet snuggly stuff.

But really?

She wants to have FUN.

And FUN is her people."

🐾 **Playgroup Notes**

Truffles has participated in playgroup and was described as:

• Steerable
• Engaged
• Social
• Tolerant
• Played well with another dog named Martin
• Gives and receives corrections appropriately

Volunteers also report that when meeting other dogs, Truffles' first instinct is usually to invite them to play.

✨ Please note: The shelter can be a stressful and overwhelming place, and a dog's behavior here may not fully reflect how they will continue to develop once they feel safe and settled in a home.

Meet Maya: Your Future Best Friend

If you are looking for a dog whose entire world will revolve around you, meet Maya.

This sweet, gentle girl is the definition of a loyal companion. While some dogs are motivated by toys or tennis balls, Maya is motivated by one thing and one thing only: pure love for her human.

She is the kind of dog who reminds you every day just how special you are.

🐶 Why Maya is So Special

✨ Your Ultimate Devotee
During playtime, if you throw a toy, Maya might start to chase it for a second before turning right around and sprinting back to your side. Her attitude is completely, "Wait, why am I chasing that when the best part of my day is right here with you?"

✨ A Social Butterfly with a Playful Side
Don't let her calm demeanor fool you—she seems to really love making friends! She recently showed off a wonderful, playful side when introduced to a much larger dog, proving she's got a great sense of fun and can hold her own with the big kids.

✨ Gentle & Mindful
Maya takes treats with the absolute softest mouth. She isn't demanding; she just loves to sit by your side, taking in the world around her and enjoying the fresh air. She also knows "sit" and will happily do so when asked.

🐾 Playgroup Notes

Maya has participated in the Gentle and Dainty playgroup, where she has consistently been described as steerable.

🐾 Meet Tank 🩷 (A569173)
🗓️ 5 years old • ♂️ Male • ⚖️ 98 lbs

Tank.

You'd think his most memorable quality would be his size.

But what really sticks with you is the calm, steady presence of this quiet soul.

A true gentle giant.

Volunteer Priya spent time with Tank and he quickly became her favorite shelter dog right now. She shared the following observations:

"It is so easy to love Tank! He has a calm, steady presence and the kind of quiet soul that stays with you long after you meet him. He is the goodest boy and a truly special dog.

Honestly, his 'worst' trait might be how he jumps up for a hug when it’s time to go back to his kennel, almost like he’s asking his person not to leave him behind.

Tank isn’t the type to constantly demand attention or climb into your lap right away. He’s happiest taking his time sniffing, exploring, and just enjoying the world around him. But if you give him patience and kindness and earn his trust, he opens up into an incredibly sweet, loving boy.

Tank is easy to leash, walks nicely, and potties outside right away. He enjoys treats, knows 'sit' and 'paw', and has participated in playgroup.

Overall, Tank is a gentle, well-mannered boy who would likely thrive in a quieter home where he can finally relax and feel secure.

And on top of all that — he is oh-so handsome! His beautiful red coat and soulful expression make him impossible to forget.

Tank deserves so much more than a kennel. He deserves someone willing to see past the stress of shelter life and recognize the loyal, gentle boy underneath. For the right big dog and guardian breed lovers, Tank is going to be an incredible addition to the family."

🐾 Playgroup Notes

Tank has participated in playgroup and was described as steerable and semi-engaged. Staff noted that he became vocal when Eraser (one male dog) arrived but was able to continue participating in a neighboring play area.

✨ Please note: The shelter can be a stressful and overwhelming place, and a dog's behavior here may not fully reflect how they will continue to develop once they feel safe and settled in a home.
