Friends of PG County Animal Shelter

Friends of PG County Animal Shelter Raising awareness for the adoptable dogs in Prince George’s County, MD. We are volunteers and not the official shelter page.

This page is managed and maintained by volunteers supporting the Prince George’s County MD Animal Shelter, the animals under the shelter's care, and the community the shelter serves. IT IS NOT ADMINISTERED, MANAGED OR AFFILIATED WITH PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY GOVERNMENT OR THE PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY ANIMAL SHELTER. This is an open intake, county shelter. Animals WILL BE EUTHANIZED for space when the

shelter is full, as it is every week. DO NOT wait if you are interested in any animal listed. PAGE POLICIES:
- CONDUCT: Rude comments, personal attacks on shelter staff, volunteers, county officials, page admins, former owners or anyone else WILL NOT be tolerated. Admins will ban people who do not follow this policy.
- CROSSPOSTING: We give you permission to share our animals and pictures - PLEASE DO! However, please leave contact information attached to the picture so that, four shares later, someone wanting to help or adopt one of our animals has the correct information.
- HOLDS: We cannot place a hold on animals through this page. YOU MUST CONTACT THE SHELTER DIRECTLY at 301-780-7200 or, even better, go to the shelter in person.
- URGENCY: All animals have a short, required hold time and with the volume entering the shelter each animal should be considered extremely urgent. Animals should not be considered safe until word comes from this page that the animal has left the shelter.
- PLEDGES: Please honor pledges made to rescue upon photo proof of their freedom ride. Unfortunately, there are scammers so please make sure the link is for the correct rescue.
- BSL: Prince George’s County has Breed Specific Legislation (BSL) prohibiting those residing within the county from owning pit-bull breed – because of that, these dogs are most often at risk. They may be fostered or adopted outside of PG County.

Cantaloupe has a silly name and memorable personality to go along with it! He won over the heart of his volunteer handler and hopes he’ll win yours too. Poor guy is urgent and must leave by Tuesday, November 18 at 7 PM. Please arrive at least one hour before closing. Shelter is closed on Sundays and Mondays.

🚨 URGENT: CANTALOUPE MUST LEAVE BY TUESDAY, 11/18 at 7 PM ⏰

Please arrive at least 1 hour before closing to meet him!

🐾 Meet Cantaloupe (A563317)
📍 5 years old | ♂️ Male | 🐶 Cane Corso | ⚖️ 68 pounds

Meet Cantaloupe — yes, you read that right! His name may sound like a fruit salad ingredient, but this big handsome Cane Corso is just as sweet as his namesake. 🍈💛

A certified volunteer favorite, Cantaloupe is an absolute dreamboat. He’s part of the loose-leash club, walking beautifully beside you like a gentleman. He’s also very food-motivated, which means training will be smooth, fun, and full of happy tail wags.

Right now, Cantaloupe is a bit underweight and could use some TLC to help him fill out — but his gentle, affectionate personality shines through in every moment. This boy is kind, polite, eager to please, and so soulful it’ll melt your heart.

Last we heard, he wasn’t a fan of playgroup, so he may prefer to be your one and only (and honestly, he’s plenty of dog to love!).

Sweet, charming, and ready to ripen into the best companion ever — Cantaloupe is truly a special one. There’s bound to be a line for this boy… so don’t wait.

💗 Let’s help this gentle melon find the loving home he deserves.

Run — don’t walk — to meet SIMBA. 🐾

When they say a picture is worth a thousand words, THIS is the one they’re talking about. Just look at that little grin! And it’s not a one-off — this sweet boy smiles in every photo. 😀

Please come to the shelter and make this adorable land seal yours. He must leave by Tuesday, November 18 at 7 PM.
⛔️ Shelter is closed Sundays & Mondays, so plan accordingly!

🚨 URGENT: SIMBA MUST LEAVE BY TUESDAY, 11/18 at 7 PM ⏰

Please arrive at least 1 hour before closing to meet him!

🐾 Meet Simba (A563705)
📍 1 year old | ♂️ Male | 🐶 Tan & White Terrier Mix | ⚖️ ~37.4 lbs

If a smile is contagious, then brace yourself — because Simba’s grin might just be the most infectious thing you see all week. This adorable little land seal has a face that could brighten even the gloomiest day. One glance at that big, joyful smile and you’ll feel your own spreading without even thinking about it.

Simba is a sweet boy who is a bit reserved and shy yet still exudes friendliness - eager to feel safe and loved! He does well in playgroup and other dogs open his shell. A lil pocket pittie, sadly, Simba is his real name but his owners didn’t reclaim him. Here’s what else we know:

- he’s about 1 year old,
- weighs a perfectly huggable 37 pounds,
- and has been winning hearts since the moment he arrived.

We can’t wait to learn more about Simba and share all the details, but for now?
💗 That smile says it all.

SHADOW is not even a year old and sounds like he’d fit in beautifully in many types of homes! 🚨 URGENT: SHADOW MUST LEAVE BY TUESDAY, 11/18 at 7 PM ⏰

Please arrive at least 1 hour before closing to meet him!

🐾 Meet Shadow (A563606)
📍 1 year old | ♂️ Male | 🐶 Terrier Mix | ⚖️ 59 pounds

Meet Shadow, a ridiculously good looking 11-month-old heartthrob whose smoky coat and soulful eyes could stop traffic. This stunning boy has that perfect combination of gentle sweetness and youthful charm — the kind of dog who makes you fall in love before you even realize it.

Shadow is calm and well-mannered in his kennel, and he walks beautifully on leash. He has the sweetest habit of gently hopping up to ask for affection — never pushy, just soft little “hi, I adore you” moments that melt your heart. While he starts off mellow, once he’s feeling comfortable, his playful side shines through.

In playgroup, Shadow has been Gentle Dainty and steerable — polite, easygoing, and well-mannered around other dogs.

Young, affectionate, and gorgeous beyond belief, Shadow is ready to leave shelter life behind and start his forever. Whoever adopts him is getting a total catch — a steady, loving boy with his whole life ahead of him.

💗 Let’s help this ridiculously good looking sweetheart find the home he deserves.

Only 5 days to go! Links on Prince George's Pet Unity Project - PG PUP can tell you how to get involved - let’s keep up the momentum!

Prince George’s County, MD has had a pit bull ban in place since 1997.

We’re the closest we’ve ever been — the most progress ever made toward replacing the ban with safer, fairer laws.

This ban is dated, discriminatory, displaces family pets, and costs residents a lot of money.

The hearing is on 11/18.

If you support ban repeal and increased education and support, please give us a follow.

🚨 19 Dogs with a 1 week deadline - Upper Marlboro, MD 🚨

This is the first Urgent List in over a month, and while we hope that means progress, we also know the holidays are coming—and intake will rise. This is a big week for our community.

On Tuesday, 11/18, two major things happen at once:
1️⃣ Nineteen dogs must leave the shelter by 7 PM
2️⃣ The County Council votes on the bill that will determine the future of pit bull–type dogs in PG County

This is our week to show up.
Be respectful. Be factual. Be relentless in your advocacy.
Thank you for standing with these 19 urgent dogs—and with the thousands who will need us in the months ahead.
