This week’s is the Marlboro Cup trophy from September 20, 1987, on display in the Mellon case in our Lobby. Java Gold, trained by Hall of Famer MacKenzie Miller and owned by Pillar of the Turf Paul Mellon, won the race with Hall of Fame jockey Pat Day in the irons. Miller and Mellon hold the record for most wins by a trainer and owner respectively, having won the race together in 1980 and 1987. During his 1987 season, Java Gold also won the Best Turn Stakes, Travers Stakes, and Whitney Handicap. Day entered the Hall of Fame with the class of 1991, Miller entered with the class of 1987, and Mellon entered with the class of 2013.
