Does your dog *actually* like the treats you are using in training? Sure, they ate it, but did they love it? Why does it matter?
🦮 Treats as reinforcers in training are an amazing tool, but only if your dog actually likes them!
🦮 Simply eating the treat does not always mean the treat was reinforcing. Here are some signs that tell us our dog likes our treats.
🟢 The behavior INCREASES - We see more of the behavior that was happening when we gave the treat.
🟢 Our dog asks for more - After eating the treat, our dog sticks around and seems to want more.
🟢 Excited body language - Our dog is enthusiastic and happy.

Distance, or how far away you are from a trigger/distraction, is one of the most important concepts to understand if you want to make progress with your dog.
All dogs have a different threshold of where they can comfortably observe and train in relation to a distraction or trigger. We like to call these “training zones”.
There are three training zones: Green, yellow, and red.
💚 A green training zone is a distance your dog can focus on you and your training easily, and is barely aware of the environment/distraction. Green zones are the ideal place to begin teaching and reinforcing new behaviors.
💛 Yellow zones are a distance where your dog is aware of the distraction/environment, but is still responsive to you and your cues. This is the ideal distance to rehearse behaviors.
❤️ A red zone is a distance where your dog is more excited/worried about the distraction or environment than you, and is unable to respond to cues or receive reinforcement. If you find yourself at a red zone, focus on managing your dog and getting back to a yellow or green zone.
The more we have successful practice in yellow zones (💛), the more those zones become green (💚). This is how we make progress in our training.

Barriers are an important part of new pet integration. This ensures that the animals can acclimate to each other in a controlled way. It allows interactions to be managed and supervised, as well as gives opportunity to provide reinforcement to both animals where they feel safe enough to receive it.
