This can’t be it.
This isn’t fair.
Our bright, sunny girl Leia is breaking.
Leia has spent 264 days at the SFAHS alone. Before arriving here, she had already been a long-term resident at another shelter. They hoped a change of scenery would help her and it did, for a while.
After coming to SFAHS, it took 84 days for Leia to be adopted. Half of that time was spent recovering from kennel cough, yet even then she never lost her spark. For a brief moment, things were okay.
Then life changed again.
Leia was returned for reasons that had nothing to do with her. When she came back, her skin was red and inflamed, her allergies flaring badly and requiring medical care. Once again, Leia found herself healing in a kennel.
That was 177 days ago.
Since then, we have done everything we can to protect Leia from the emotional toll of long-term sheltering. She’s had a private room, foster attempts with multiple families, outings in the community through Rescue Dog Recess, extra enrichment, and extra care. But time and constant change leave marks that love alone can’t erase.
Leia has always been full of joy. She zoomed across the play yard with enthusiasm that made you laugh. She’d play-bow, then toss her whole backside into your legs just to pull you into the game.
When she’s tired, she presses her whole body into yours, soaking up affection and delivering kisses. And treats? This girl has absolutely snatched an entire treat bag the second opportunity struck.
But now… she isn’t the same dog.
The stress. The inconsistency. The constant presence of other dogs coming and going. The noise. The waiting. It has all taken a toll. Her reactivity has intensified. Her frustration is showing in new and concerning ways. Her mind is unraveling, and it is heartbreaking to witness.
Leia doesn’t need more time here.
She needs a home NOW.
Leia needs a different kind of recovery now. She needs someone patient who understands trauma where she can be the ONLY animal in the home. Someone willing to help her rediscover who she is beneath all of this stress.
If you can be the person Leia needs, please adopt her today.
If you can’t, please share her story. 💙
