🦟 World Mosquito Day — Protect Your Pup from Heartworm! 🐶❤️

Did you know? It only takes one bite from an infected mosquito to give your dog heartworm disease — a serious and potentially fatal condition.

Heartworm facts:

Mosquitoes can transmit heartworm anywhere — even in your own backyard.

Heartworm disease damages the heart, lungs, and blood vessels.

Symptoms often don’t show until the disease is advanced.

The good news: Heartworm is 100% preventable!
✅ Keep your dog on monthly prevention year-round — even in winter. Mosquitoes can survive and bite during warmer days in any season.
✅ Schedule yearly testing to catch any infections early.
✅ Reduce standing water around your home to help cut down on mosquitoes.

A small monthly dose keeps your best friend safe from a big problem. 🐾

🐇 Why Yearly Exams Are So Important for Rabbits

They can hide signs of illness extremely well. By the time they show obvious symptoms, their condition may already be advanced — making regular check-ups critical for their health.

At a yearly exam, our veterinarians will:
✅ Check teeth for overgrowth, spurs, or malocclusion (common in rabbits)
✅ Listen to the heart and lungs
✅ Assess weight, muscle tone, and overall body condition
✅ Examine skin, fur, ears, and eyes for signs of mites, infection, or injury
✅ Discuss diet, housing, and enrichment to prevent health problems
✅ Screen for signs of reproductive disease — spaying/neutering greatly reduces risk of certain cancers

Why it matters:
Dental disease, GI stasis, and uterine cancer are all common in rabbits — and early detection can make a life-saving difference.

Your bunny’s best life starts with proactive care.

🐾 Tick Season Reminder! 🐾
Ticks are still very active in New Hampshire — especially from May through July, with another spike in the fall. These pests can carry Lyme disease, anaplasmosis, ehrlichiosis, and more!

Protect your pup:
✅ Keep them on year-round tick prevention — yes, even in the winter! Ticks can be active any time temperatures are above freezing.
✅ Check their coat, ears, between toes, and under collars after every walk
✅ Avoid tall grass, leaf litter, and brushy areas

At Hopkinton Animal Hospital, we’re dedicated to keeping our feline patients healthy—and that starts with important screenings like FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus) and FeLV (Feline Leukemia Virus).

Both viruses can compromise your cat’s immune system, making them more vulnerable to infections and illness. What makes testing so important? Early detection allows for better management, safety, and quality of life.

A Truly Special Guest!

We had the incredible honor of seeing a 63-year-old Amazon parrot here at Hopkinton Animal Hospital — and yes, you read that right! 63 years old! This amazing age is a testament to the importance of dedicated care and lifelong commitment when it comes to birds as pets.

Parrots, especially species like Amazons, can live 50+ years in captivity. That means owning one isn’t just a pet—it’s a lifetime responsibility. Here are a few key things to keep in mind with long-lived birds:

🩺 Routine veterinary care – Annual exams and bloodwork help catch issues early.
🥦 Proper nutrition – A balanced diet beyond just seeds supports long-term health.
🧠 Mental stimulation – Enrichment, social interaction, and training are essential.
🏡 Future planning – These birds may outlive their owners, so long-term care plans are crucial.

We’re always inspired by pet parents who go above and beyond for their feathered companions.

Why Routine Bloodwork Matters for Your Dog

At Hopkinton Animal Hospital, we believe in catching health issues before they become serious—and that’s where routine bloodwork comes in. Even when your dog seems perfectly healthy, blood tests can reveal what’s happening beneath the surface.

✅ Monitor organ function (liver, kidneys, thyroid)
✅ Detect early signs of illness or infection
✅ Track changes as your dog ages
✅ Establish healthy baselines for future comparison
✅ Ensure your dog is ready for anesthesia or medications

Whether it's part of an annual wellness exam or a pre-surgical check, routine bloodwork is a key tool in keeping your pup feeling their best for years to come. 💙

Have questions or want to schedule your dog’s next wellness visit? Give us a call—we’re here to help!

Puppy Prep 101: Socialization, Vaccines & Staying Parasite-Free!

Bringing home a new puppy? Congratulations! Here's what every new pup parent should know to give their furry friend the healthiest start possible:

🦴 Socialization is key!
The first few months are critical for helping your puppy grow into a confident, well-adjusted adult. Introduce them to new sights, sounds, people, and other pets in a safe and positive way. Training classes, controlled playdates and vet visits are great ways to help!

💉 Stick to the vaccine schedule
Puppies need a series of vaccines starting as early as 8 weeks of age to protect them from serious (and sometimes deadly) diseases like:
• Parvovirus/Distemper
• Rabies
• Leptospirosis
• Lyme
• Bordetella (kennel cough)

Vaccines are given in a series every 3–4 weeks until about 16 weeks of age.

💩 Don’t forget the f***l checks!
Puppies are especially prone to internal parasites like roundworms, hookworms, and giardia. Even if they look perfectly healthy, a f***l test can catch hidden infections before they cause problems—for your puppy or your family!

Got questions about your puppy’s care plan? We're here to help guide you every step of the way.

🐱💡 Did you know? Flea and tick prevention is just as important for cats as it is for dogs!

Even indoor cats can be at risk—fleas and ticks can hitch a ride into your home on shoes, clothes, or other pets. Once inside, they can cause a variety of issues, including:

🔹 Itching, hair loss, and skin infections
🔹 Flea allergy dermatitis (a painful allergic reaction)
🔹 Tapeworms (transmitted by fleas)
🔹 Serious diseases like anemia or tick-borne illnesses

Preventatives are safe, easy to use, and protect your cat—and your home—from a major headache.

Not sure which product is right for your feline friend? We’re happy to help—just give us a call or stop by!

🧺 We’re in Need of Towel & Blanket Donations! 🐾

Both Weare and Hopkinton Animal Hospitals are currently in need of clean towels, hand towels, and blankets. These items are used daily to help keep our patients safe and comfortable—especially after surgery, during recovery, and while handling cats, birds, and reptiles.

💙 We gladly accept:
• Towels (any size)
• Hand towels
• Blankets (no electric or weighted blankets, please)

Donated items don’t need to be new—gently used and freshly washed is perfect!

Your support helps us continue to provide the best care possible for all of our furry, feathered, and scaly patients. Donations can be dropped off at either hospital during regular business hours. Thank you so much! 💛
