I don't want to stereotype breeds, but one thing I have found pretty consistent among heelers is that they have a "bubble" and they are uber conscious of who and what they allow into it. Don't invade a heeler's space if you are trying to build trust with her. It's amazing how trainable they are and how much they enjoy pleasing their person, but they are often distrustful of people and dogs until they have evaluated the situation. They also seem to be empathic and pick up the slightest vibe their humans have about situations.
Gypsy is among a list of reactive heelers I have worked with (including my own goofy heeler) and she is such a great dog. She bonded with me very quickly and follows me around the farm. I will soon be getting her out in sketchy scenarios to build her trust and show her that I will protect her.
