Wishing my most special black unicorn Ype a very happy 18th birthday! 🦄🎉🥳 He always has time for loves and really tries to be an Appaloosa for me (as he knows how much I like them). I can't imagine a world without him in it - his presence is so integral to my life. He is my rock when the world tries to rip me apart. ❤️🖤💖

Happy 8th birthday to Easabelle 🥳🥕🎉💖 our very own PITA ("Princess In Training Already" or "Pain In The Ass" depending on how she is behaving. 🤣 Seriously though, this girl has been through so much in her short life - from dealing with a surrogate mother who had seizures, to having check ligament surgery, to getting seriously ill, to being diagnosed with bi-lateral ECVM, to having a bi-lateral ovariectomy and finally to developing seizures herself (we head to CSU in two weeks for a brain CT). Yet, through it all, she has remained smart, sassy and bold. So good natured about taking the 22 pills twice a day she has to have to keep the seizures away. She loves and excels at ground work - figuring out all the pole challenges mom sets up for her. She knows all kinds of commands for ground driving and is so incredibly willing under saddle (we don't ride dressage anymore, just out and about in nature at the pace she chooses). She has alway wanted to be like her Aunt Xena, and she is proving that she is. Tough as nails and ready to meet any challenge that comes her way! Mares are so special, in so many ways. 💖❤️‍🔥💗

Tomorrow will be one year since you left us Xena Warrior Princess. 💔😭 I missed you quietly today. No tears, no heaving sobs. Just a soft ache that settled into my bones - when the world goes still. It wasn’t sadness, not exactly, more like the memories of your soft nickers brushing past me, leaving a warmth I couldn’t hold onto. I thought about your gentleness, the way your silly expressions would make me smile, even on the worst days. And for a moment, I wasn’t grieving. I was grateful. Grateful to have known you. To have stood close enough to the light you carried - to feel it. Maybe that’s what love is. Not the clinging, not the despair, but the quiet joy of remembering. You were here. Poor Lucia had to go to an eye veterinarian today because her left eye has been swollen and irritated. Turns out she had some small black, hard nodules on the inside of her third eyelid that were scratching her cornea. The vet said she had never seen anything like it before (surprise!). They were removed and we have sent them off for pathology. If you want to own a Friesian, be prepared for weird health issues and lots of vet bills!!!

On this day of the horse, I would like to honor the mares in my life. As most horse people know, mares can be tricky in that they take a long time to bond with you and to trust you as their leader. But once they do, they will ride to hell and back if you ask them. Easabelle - they spicy pepper who has faced so many health obstacles and yet overcomes each of them with her incredible will and determination. Lucia - the grand duchess who trusts me explicitly to take care of her, no matter what the situation, and gives me her best try every time. And finally, Xena - the purple princess who is no longer with me, but who will always hold a big chunk of my heart. She was the one who set the standards for all the girls that came after. The bravest, truest, strongest, kindest mare a human could ever ask for.

I have had so many "disaster" tests in my life in dressage that I have come to learn that if you can't laugh and simply enjoy the fun of it all then you probably should quit showing. Driving your horse (and yourself) into the ground with excessive training to meet YOUR goal does nothing but damage the bond you have so carefully nurtured.
