‼Just a friendly reminder‼

🔺West Nile Virus
With mosquito activity high during the warmer months, we have seen an increased number of cases of West Nile Virus. Now is an important time to make sure your horse is protected against insect borne diseases. West Nile Virus (WNV) is a mosquito transmitted disease that can affect horses and other animals and may cause severe neurological illness and even death. Clinical signs of WNV in horses may include a low-grade fever (101.5–103.5° F), neurological symptoms such as tremors of the muzzle, face, and neck muscles, periods of hyperexcitability, and ataxia, weakness or paralysis of a single limb or multiple limbs. Horses with WNV are not contagious to other horses or humans but clinical signs of WNV are an emergency and the horse should be evaluated as soon as possible.

🔺Vaccination
This is one of the most important steps you can take. Keeping your horse’s West Nile vaccination current can significantly reduce the risk of severe disease. Vaccination is recommended annually in the spring prior to mosquito season but if your horse is unvaccinated, we encourage you to do so as soon as possible.

Horner Equine is proud to announce Dr. Marit Wang is joining our team as an associate veterinarian!

Marit grew up in Devils Lake, North Dakota where her interest in veterinary medicine started at a young age though her involvement in 4H and her family’s draft horses. She attended Colorado State University to receive her bachelors degree in Biomedical Science in 2022 and Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Kansas State University in 2026. Marit worked for Horner Equine two summers during vet school and is eager to return and serve the equine community! Her special interests include sports medicine and reproduction. Please welcome Dr. Wang to our team!
