Carebear is a circus pup! She’s learning about platforms, settling on a mat, and pivoting around a bowl. Why all these frivolous-sounding tricks? Here are just a few of the benefits:
-Settling on a mat means she can be a chill companion at the cafe or in the classroom. Mat = relax, wherever we go.
-Going to a platform on cue makes it easy for her to take turns with other pets or allow humans to attach a harness and leash. A great foundational behavior to use in all kinds of situations.
-Pivoting builds hind-end awareness and can become swinging into a tight heel position. Flashy obedience, anyone?
-Tricks and positive reinforcement training, no matter how silly or simple the skill, work to build optimism and confidence, strengthen dog-human trust, provide mental and physical exercise, and increase a dog’s behavioral repertoire. #253

A Lasso appreciation post, my (Kay’s) Old Time Scotch Collie. Lasso turned one year old on March 12th! He has turned into one of the best family dogs I’ve ever seen, and is a dream to train. Over his first year we have really focused on foundational training skills, socialization, and beginner obedience skills. I can see him having great interest in sports like lure coursing (fast cat) and disc sports once he’s older and fully grown. But he is also just wonderful around the house, and the best with my kids. He has also come along with me to work with some clients and has done so well. While he has his wild boy moments, as any adolescent dog does, he is truly the best boy. Can’t say enough good things about him!
This pic is of him relaxing at the playground while my kids, and about hundred others, ran around and had fun. So proud that with the work we’ve done he is able to settle in this environment. ♥️ #253

This is Biscuit! He is a seven month old English Bulldog that worked with Kay on puppy socialization and foundational training skills this winter. Not sure why it’s taken so long to post this rockstar, but I am so proud of this little (big) guy! We did two rounds of day training, and he learned it all, sit, down, place, touch, and recall! He has fantastic focus, even in distracting environments, and is proof that this breed is not stubborn as they are typically labeled if you train them with positive reinforcement! #253

Meet Franklin! He is a dachshund puppy who has been participating in puppy day training with Kay! He is smart, fast, and very eager for both food and toys, making him a dream to work with. We’ve been introducing him to new sights and sounds, making sure his experiences are positive and enjoyable to ensure he grows up to be a calm and confident adult. Since these little guys tend to be known for barking, we have worked on ways to get our attention appropriately, and how to cope with his emotions that may typically trigger barking. We are excited to keep working with this smart boy!

Happy third birthday to Legend! Legend joined our community after a particularly awful experience with a punitive trainer. When his person called to cancel the rest of her lessons with him, she accidentally called us and the rest is history! His person was looking for support in training Legend to be a stellar pet and potential service dog. In a world where training is games and skill building and behaviors that feel good, Legend has excelled! He has started doing agility class with Poppy as a form of mental and physical exercise and to polish his confidence in new environments. The last time he was in agility class, it was all clean runs! Congrats, Legend! #253

Sasha has spent the summer working on foundational skills like recall, loose leash walking, and stay. We’ve also spent time doing continued socialization around kids and other dogs. While Sasha is very friendly, her over excitable nature made greetings a challenge when we started. Now she can relax and watch the world around her without pulling us over trying to say hi to everyone. Being an adolescent means this training never stops, because the more we practice and reward the behaviors we like, the more likely they will become habits later! #253
