Have you heard of LITTERMATE SYNDROME? If not, keep reading!

We see the comments often. People asking us to adopt out bonded siblings together. We understand the intention behind it. It feels right, even loving, to want dogs who grew up together to stay together forever.

But in reality, keeping sibling puppies together can do far more harm than good.

There is a behavioral phenomenon called littermate syndrome that can happen when two puppies, especially from the same litter or close in age, are raised together in the same home. Despite the heartwarming idea of lifelong companionship, littermate syndrome often leads to serious emotional and behavioral issues for both dogs.

So what is littermate syndrome?

Littermate syndrome refers to a pattern of developmental and behavioral problems that can occur when two puppies are raised in the same home. This can include:
๐Ÿพ Extreme attachment to each other and difficulty functioning when separated
๐Ÿพ Lack of individual development, which leads to poor socialization with humans and other dogs
๐Ÿพ Increased fearfulness and anxiety, especially in new situations
๐Ÿพ Difficulty in training, as the dogs focus more on each other than their handler
๐Ÿพ Aggression or conflict as they mature and develop different personalities

These issues can begin as early as 8 to 10 weeks of age or may not appear until adolescence. The effects can be long-lasting and very difficult, if not impossible, to reverse.

What does this mean for adoption?

Veterinarians, trainers, and behaviorists strongly advise against adopting sibling puppies, or even two unrelated puppies close in age, at the same time. Many reputable rescues and shelters, including ours, follow this guidance and do not adopt littermates out together. This is not a rule based on convenience. It is based on real experience and our desire to set each dog up for long-term success.

Puppies are kept together in foster when young, but as they grow, allowing them both to flourish on their own is what is best for everyone! Our goal is not to separate loving siblings. It is to prevent them from becoming overly dependent on each other and missing out on healthy development.

But what about kittens?

This is an important distinction. Kittens are very different from puppies. In fact, kittens thrive when adopted in pairs. They learn social skills from each other, burn off energy through play, and are far less likely to develop behavioral problems when they have a feline companion. For kittens, being adopted together is often the healthier, more compassionate option.

What is best for the dogs?

The best path forward is for each puppy to be adopted into a loving, committed home where they can:
๐Ÿพ Form a strong bond with their human family
๐Ÿพ Build confidence and independence
๐Ÿพ Be properly socialized with a variety of people, animals, and environments
๐Ÿพ Receive individual attention and training

Dogs are incredibly adaptable. Within days or weeks of settling into their new homes, they form new bonds and begin to thrive. In many cases, puppies that were separated from their littermates go on to live happier, more emotionally balanced lives than those who stayed together.

We know itโ€™s hard.

We love these animals deeply. We want what is best for them, not just what feels right in the moment. And in this case, what is best is helping each puppy grow into a confident, well-adjusted dog on their own.

Thank you for trusting us to make decisions based on the dogsโ€™ long-term well-being. That is always our priority.

This isnโ€™t an easy update to shareโ€”and truthfully, itโ€™s taken me some time to find the words, the strength, and the stillness in my heart to do it justice.

Drift wasnโ€™t just a rescue. She was family. We loved her deeply, whollyโ€”like she had always been ours.

She came to us during a time when we needed healing just as much as she did. I truly believe God placed her in our lives on purpose. We gave her what we couldโ€”safety, warmth, comfort, and a heart full of love. In return, she gave us something just as powerful: joy, purpose, and a reminder of hope.

Drift had beautiful days. She basked in the sun, found peace in soft blankets, and leaned into the hands that cherished her. She lived fullyโ€”right up until the day she quietly let go. That morning, something was different. She didnโ€™t touch her food, and there was a stillness in her eyes that hadnโ€™t been there before. By evening, she had passedโ€”cradled in the arms of a loving volunteer, wrapped in gentleness, dignity, and love.

She never, not for one second, went unloved at For Belleโ€™s Sake. And she never will.

I miss her every single day. But now, the tears are softening into smiles. The ache is making room for the warmth of her memory.

Thank youโ€”for loving her from afar, for supporting her journey, and for giving us the gift of more time with her. She was so very loved.

Thank you--to Sunset Memorial Gardens Pet Crematory for handing her remains with tenderness. And for donating her service. We are so humbled by your generosity.

Intake Date: 24 June 2025 ----- Age at Intake: 1.5 yrs ----- Breed: Cocker Spaniel ----- Size: 27 lbs ----- Status: owner surrender ----- Compatible with: dogs, possible cats, older children----- Suitable for: home with fenced yard. Possible apartment with daily leashed exercise ----- Medical/Behavioral Needs: snappy at young children ----- Additional Notes: Meet Oro! Named after the color gold like his beautiful coat and his little heart of gold. Oro was surrendered to rescue due to being snappy with the young children in the home and the larger dog. His issue? Well, he needs to be neutered (working on it), and he is fearful and unsure. Lack of confidence sometimes manifests into what appears on the outside to be aggression. We have made GREAT strides though! We started right away with correcting his behavior and lots of exposure. We were told he wasn't good with cats but here he has been bc we won't tolerate anything else. He corrects well which is a bonus. He has met horses, calves, goats, pigs, poultry, and lots of farm cats and indoor cats. He has met them all well and is corrected if overly interested which he has responded well to. Oro does great on a leash! I love that he checks back in regularly when on a long lead and I think with training, he would do wonderful off lead with recall. He is a super sweet and cuddly boy. Wants to be with his people and would be a great travel partner too. He crates on command. He loves affection. We will keep working with him on children but recommend older children for now. Littles are intimidating for Oro. He also will continue to improve with his interactions and introductions to dogs especially after neuter. He is around many dogs here and although anxious, he minds his manners. We are so excited to watch him improve and can't wait to find his forever family. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If interested in meeting and potentially adopting, please read the adoption requirements and complete the adoption application located at forbellessake.org. Once processed and approved a meet and greet can be scheduled and if a match an adoption can be finalized at that time. FBS standard adoption fee is $175. All residents are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, dewormed, microchipped, and treated for any known medical needs. Breeds are best guess. Housetraining is not guaranteed but crate training is worked on with all residents. A secure physically fenced yard is prioritized if a yard is present. Temperament cannot be and is not guaranteed.

Possible apartment with daily leashed exercise ----- Medical/Behavioral Needs: has some stranger danger, shy ----- Additional Notes: Meet Tank! Our handsome nub tailed buddy. Tank was surrendered due to allergies in the family and is settling in. He is a very sweet and cuddly boy once he gets his feet under him. He really lacks confidence and that manifests into some stranger danger so we are working on meeting new people calmly. He is good with the dogs and cats in rescue foster and adapting nicely. We know his stranger danger recovery is something that would have to be worked on in his forever family, too and knowing most owners don't continously train and correct, we do recommend a quieter home without a ton of visitors or a family that will put him in place when visitors arrive so he can adapt at a distance at first. Tank is a cutie deserving of a forever. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If interested in meeting and potentially adopting, please read the adoption requirements and complete the adoption application located at forbellessake.org. 381 days. Thatโ€™s how long sweet January has waited in rescue for her forever family. Over a year of watching other dogs come and go. Over a year of hoping that ๐˜๐—ผ๐—ฑ๐—ฎ๐˜† would be her day.

Weโ€™ve done everything we can to help her shine โ€” January has completed ๐—ฝ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—ณ๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜€๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ฎ๐—น ๐˜๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด, and weโ€™re including ๐—™๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฒ ๐—ฝ๐—ผ๐˜€๐˜-๐—ฎ๐—ฑ๐—ผ๐—ฝ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป ๐˜๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐˜€๐˜‚๐—ฝ๐—ฝ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐˜ to set her and her future family up for success. Her adoption fee is just $๐Ÿฑ๐Ÿฌ. We believe in her that much. But even with all that, sheโ€™s still waiting.

The truth is, rescue gets hard. After this long, we start having painful conversations about the future of long-term dogs. But weโ€™re not giving up on January โ€” not quite yet. She deserves a home. A real one. One where sheโ€™s loved, challenged, held accountable, and celebrated for the bright, spunky, ๐—ฝ๐—ฒ๐˜๐—ถ๐˜๐—ฒ ๐˜€๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—ฝ๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ฑ ๐—บ๐—ถ๐˜… she is.

All she needs is someone to believe in her like we do.

Could it be you? Could today finally be Januaryโ€™s day?
