Let it RAIN!!!🌧️

After a very soggy and cool spring, summer heat and humidity has led to very dry conditions here. We are thrilled to welcome a cool and rainy Sunday!

Some are more excited than others, as you can see! 🦆 💦

You see these posts circulating from time to time but we had our own close call today.

BALLOONS 🎈 SUCK!!!

They are bad for the environment and they kill. No really, they kill! Wild or domestic, they do not discriminate. These latex and mylar temporary “decorations” are deadly.

Today we found one in the big bovine area. An area that is no where near a road. It’s in a wooded area on our 100 acre property. How it managed to find its way here is not only crazy in its own but should serve as a reminder that these things can and do travel. Either by being released, getting loose from an outdoor event or drifting from your trash. Thankfully we found it before they did. It was near their hay so this could have been a very different post. And NO it was not baled in their hay.

Our veterinary expenses are high enough. And there is absolutely no price you can put on a life. As we are sure you can imagine, this really got us wound up!

PS Balloons SUCK!

One of the many things to happen yesterday was we were able to get a halter back on Miss Daisy!

Daisy came in with a halter on, but it wasn’t a breakaway halter and was snug on her muzzle. After we were able to give her a sedative and a hoof trim we removed that halter. Since it has been a struggle to get close enough to get one back on her. There is lots of “rework” to do with this beautiful gal. We are slooooooowly making progress but there are health and care items that can’t wait. Yesterday, we were able to get her sedated and get her vaccines and dental completed (it was all hands on deck, so no photo proof other than her bill…🥸). We also took the opportunity to put a better fitting and safer halter back on her for her upcoming hoof trim! Having her haltered makes it easier to give her an oral sedative when necessary, like for hoof trims. Her daily routine with Poppy and us is gaining us some traction in the trust building but again, it’s a slow process with some. For now, we are happy to report that her exam went well and our friend is healthy with no physical or medical concerns!

Good morning!
We are still here, just been super busy. The perfect summer weather, we totally took advantage of! Yesterday was one of our big routine veterinary days. Everyone did great and are now good for another year. We have one more big vet day in a few weeks. Annual vaccinations, exams, dentals, lots of bloodwork and prescriptions/ refills.

Remember that 10,000 dollar fundraising goal we had set? Thanks to many of you we made it close! However, here we are, just over halfway through the year and the necessary expenses have far exceeded the spring goal. Now onto summer. We have a few more vet appointments, dentist appointments and of course farrier visits. We will be out in the hay field after work to gather more hay today. We are doing everything we can to keep the sanctuary’s expenses as low as possible. We have closed our doors to any new intakes as we need to make sure those in our care have what they need and deserve. The sanctuary relies on donors and volunteers to keep everyone here safe, loved and well cared for.

To give some perspective and transparency, to date your donations have gone towards:

💲9705 in hay (not including what we will get today)
💲7843.75 in vetting/ medical expenses

Again, we cant thank those of you who donate enough. Those that rely on all of us are getting what they need thanks to you!

What does one do to beat heat?
Hay and more hay!

We got to see a huge family of turkeys at the field, finish filling the hay loft and then some AND enjoy the sunset with the little moo crew.

Poppy and Daisy. These two standard gals are as beautiful as their names. Poppy, who has been at the sanctuary since 2013, has bonded with Daisy who joined the gang last year.
Daisy reverted back to feral status and has been “a tough nut to crack”, so to speak. We always provide lots of space with newcomers. Sometimes it takes a few days, a few weeks, even months with some. Moving somewhere new can be traumatic in its own, but then when you add trust issues, handling concerns, social disruption and more, it can take a lot longer. Patience and not losing hope is key.
Daisy has found her place and is happy and comfortable with her equine family but still finds us as less than desirable. Any time we have had to assert ourselves for her own health- vetting, hoof trims, has set us back. Kind of a 1 step forward, 2 steps back, situation. We get it. We can never stress enough how everyone is unique. That goes for all species. Donkeys are incredibly sensitive and it takes time, a lot of time with some to prove you’re trustworthy of their friendship.
We have begun a new routine to hopefully help ease her in. Poppy, who once went through similar, is very much trusting in us. We have begun feeding just Poppy and Daisy in the catch pen. Hoping a smaller space where she can observe us working with Poppy will get her interest going. Of course there’s always a pocket full of treats during these sessions. She has the curiosity so hopefully the trust will come next.

What a great weekend!
Thank you to all who came to our Open House yesterday. It was such a great day and we thoroughly enjoyed visiting with each of you! It has been such a wacky season so far, it was long overdue. Our next one will be August 9th, in case you missed it!
Today we spent some time in the sanctuary veggie garden and things are growing! There’s nothing better than fresh veggies from the garden. Zucchini, summer squash, kale, beans -all ready for the picking. Cucumbers are starting to take off and little baby pumpkins are starting to form for fall. Raspberries are growing all over, which our feathered friends LOVE! Just what we all needed to get out of the rainy funk and into the summer season! 💚

The beautiful Maeve. 🥰

The scar and indent on her muzzle are permanent reminders of her past. A hard past. Where she was treated as something and not someone. A piece of equipment. Used, abused and then thrown away. The fact that she allows us to halter her when necessary is a reminder of what respect, love, patience and earning trust can do. It was a long road to emotional recovery but one that ended at sanctuary. A place where we respect boundaries and in return we have found one of the best friends imaginable!

All who meet Maeve witness this. Her story, her journey, is one of many we will always be grateful to be a part of. We are grateful to all who support the sanctuary therefore helping those like Maeve. 💚

Who are we? What makes us different?

Nestled back in the woods of Fitzwilliam New Hampshire is a small sanctuary and farm. A sanctuary and home for misfits. Home to the handicapped, ill, senior, orphaned or otherwise “unadoptable” farm animals. Our family, human and animal, work as a team to build and maintain our home. Our sanctuary. Our farm. Our homestead. We let nature, our instincts, our natural drive contribute to the creation of a self sustaining, functional and beautiful piece of earth we call home.

We as a family have been dedicated to this cause. Magzalea started in 2002 with the start of our family. All expenses paid by our day jobs. As our animal family grew we in turn outgrew our original home and farm of 13 years. In 2015 we moved to 93 acres with a rundown house. Since, we have been clearing land, building fences, and rebuilding the sanctuary. We went Non Profit last year, 501c3. Though the majority of the expenses are still coming out of our pockets, we have had great support from our friends far and wide. We raise funds through our homemade products, candles, soaps, salves, and other natural necessities. Along with fundraising activities. We host a community gathering monthly at our work shop- Farmer/Homesteader Group Therapy. Here, we chat about things we have learned, bring questions and pick each others brains. No agenda, very open, friendly and fun!
