Lucy and Ricky are really starting to settle in here. It's been 5 weeks since they arrived and both needed their spay/neuter surgeries so it's been a confusing time for them. Robby built a new house for them which I painted but they seem to like their little place right now - probably not feeling like they need more change. So I got to painting their old place. These two are so curious and sweet. Just like dogs, you can see they start to decompress and become more trusting. They are learning that they are safe here. That we will give them what they need on their terms. We just love them so much ❤️❤️

Our Lucy Love is doing great after her spay on Thursday 🥰🥰. However, apparently she is quite a snorer. The staff at the front desk could hear her after her surgery while she was still under. Crank up the volume!

Barbie had a great time yesterday with the children at the Animal Humane NM's Camp Humane where everyone learned about all the misconceptions about pitties and met two pittie ambassadors, Amora and our Barbie 😍. Barbie loved all the children and they loved her. They worked on their photography skills and learned just how hard it is to take good photos of animals (we couldn't get one of her ears up 😆) but they did get a few gems.

Barbie was also cat tested yesterday and she aced it. She is just an all around perfect dog.

Barbie is available for adoption through Pitties and Kitties Rescue of New Mexico.

Dani has the cutest nose freckles!

Dani came to us one year ago and she was feral. She was found roaming in Eldorado when she was captured. She is still a little skittish but she's making progress. At first, you couldn't get close but now you may be able to give her a little scratch. We will give her all the time she needs to feel comfortable and safe and keep giving her peanuts - her favorite treat.

CharLee has been a big help finding goat heads so they can be eradicated from the corral. For those outside of the southwest, goat heads are spawns of Satan that start as lovely ground cover with pretty little flowers, but the seeds turn into a pointy, hard, weapon that can pierce just about anything.

CharLee knows we need to destroy these so no one gets one stuck in their foot. He really looks out for his pack mates ❤️❤️.

Update on Ricky -- Ricky had his neuter last week and did wonderful! He is known as the chonker pig at the vet weighing in at 140 pounds. But that's 140 pounds of good boy!

When a new pig or other animal comes here for sanctuary, we don't always see their super power right away. But with Ricky, he showed his stuff! Ricky's super power is being so brave and trusting, he goes right into the crate. If you've ever tried to crate a pig, especially one who just arrived and comes with past experiences, it can be a challenge. With Ricky, once he knows what you want, he goes right in ❤️❤️.

Lucy will have her spay on July 10th. If you can spare some $$ to help cover her spay, it would be really appreciated. We didn't expect we would have to alter both Ricky and Lucy when we took them in so another unexpected expense 😅.

Thanks to everyone who has already supported these two beauties!

The last two Big Bang Babies are going into foster this week so it's time to focus on the real hero here, Barbie! 🥰

Barbie is only about a year and a half and this was not her first litter (but it will be her last). I don't know all the details of her last home, but I've heard it wasn't great, to say the least. I can tell that Barbie is so happy to be in a Safe Place.

Right now, Barbie is so excited with everything: food, play time, lying in my office while I'm on the computer. This easy life seems all new and exciting to her. She loves people and just wants to be around them. We are starting to introduce her to the other dogs but it will be done slowly. Barbie has so much energy, she can be overwhelming. It seems like she never had a chance to be a puppy so she's enjoying that now.

Barbie is house and crate trained. She does fine in the crate and can entertain herself. When she's out of the crate, she will look for the nearest lap to lay on. She is food motivated and will be an easy-to-train dog.

But what I've enjoyed the most is watching her pounce! She is a master. There are a few videos here that show her pouncing on something - maybe a cricket or a blade of grass 😆. Its a joy to watch her feeling so free and happy.

Barbie will be spayed this week and ready for her new home. Hit me up with any questions or visit the Pitties and Kitties Rescue of New Mexico page for an adoption application.

Yard Sale Donations Wanted!

We're getting ready for a big Safe Place Animal Rescue & Sanctuary Yard Sale to raise much-needed funds for the animals — and we need your help!

If you're doing any spring (or summer!) cleaning, we'd love your gently used items! Think:
🖼️ Home decor
📚 Books
👕 Clothes
🎮 Toys & games
🍽️ Kitchenware
🎒 Bags & accessories
??? Other cool stuff

We kindly ask that donated items be clean and in good, usable condition. While we’re so grateful for your generosity, we aren’t able to take anything broken, overly worn, or missing pieces. Also, large items like furniture could be challenging but if you feel it would really be valuable, please reach out to discuss.

Please share and if you’d like to help by reaching out to your friends, family and neighbors and coordinating pick up or drop off, we’d really appreciate it.

Questions about items or drop off/pick up, email [email protected].

A special thanks to Cole and her family for offering to host the yard sale in ABQ!!

Every donated item helps us feed, shelter, and care for the animals who call Safe Place home. Thank you for being part of our pack! 🐷🐾🐐💛
