If you’re using crate rotations or keeping dogs separated right now, I want to start by saying this:
I’m proud of you. 💗
Choosing safety, prevention, and management is not cruel... it’s smart, responsible, and often the most loving choice you can make while things are unstable.
Keeping dogs separate does not mean you’ve failed.
It means you’re protecting everyone while you figure out what your dogs need.
Many foster based rescues (including ones I’ve worked with for years) rely heavily on crate rotations and structured separation. Trust me, it isn’t easier for us than it is for you. But it is necessary sometimes, especially in multi-dog households where tension, conflict, or overwhelm has entered the picture.
🆘 Why rotations help:
•They prevent rehearsals of unsafe behaviors.
•They reduce stress and emotional overload.
•They give dogs time to decompress and self-regulate.
•They create breathing room so learning and healing can happen.
💡A few helpful tips:
• Place kennels in calm areas when possible. Away from high traffic or commotion. Think out of sight, out of mind. This helps interrupt old behavior patterns.
• Rotate intentionally, not emotionally. Calm transitions matter.
• If dogs who’ve had disagreements share space, keep them leashed, at a distance, and reinforce calm, neutral behavior. ⚠️ Don’t rush interactions!
• Management is not permanent. It’s a bridge, not a life sentence.
I’ve spent decades using rotations and structured management with my own dogs, foster dogs, hospice seniors, and high-needs cases. 💓 It’s not giving up, it’s giving your dogs a chance to succeed safely.
If you need help setting up rotations, building a safety plan, or working toward rebuilding rapport between dogs, I’m always happy to help. You don’t have to navigate this alone. 🐾 Please reach out and let's work on a plan together.
