Dog behavior tip!

Many dogs will roll over to show you their belly, however it's not always a request for a belly rub! Exposing their belly is sometimes what's called an appeasement behavior, which can be a sign of fear or anxiety. They're trying to let you know that they're not a threat! So how do you know if your dog actually wants a belly rub or not? Look at their overall body language!

Dogs who are exhibiting other stress signals, such as lip licking, yawning, hunching over, "creeping" along the ground, showing the whites of their eyes, or squinting likely don't actually want you to touch them.

On the other hand, dogs who have loose body language, with loose wagging tails and soft eyes, may actually be requesting a nice tummy massage. Check out our stories for a little more info!

IMPORTANT!

Summer temps have arrived here in Arlington County, which means we need to remind our community about the dangers of leaving pets in cars. Already this year we have lost a pet in the community due to heat stroke after being left in a hot car, and have responded to several other calls which could have ended in tragedy.

DO NOT leave your pets in the car when the temperature is over 65 degrees outside. Even if it is cooler in the morning, temperatures can rise incredibly quickly and become dangerous. If you see a pet in a car on a hot day, please call AWLA's Animal Control at (703) 931-9241. Thank you!
