And when you understand anything about biomechanics, you will understand how detrimental this is…

Made an infographic for all of the people in the comments of the last post trying to deny the physics of how draw reins work.

No matter how “experienced” the rider is, draw reins are still a pulley system.

When a rider applies ANY pressure to the draw rein, it will pull the horse’s head to the direction of the other fixed point of the draw rein, which no matter whether they’re connected to the breastplate, saddle billets or Center of the girth results in the head being pulled down and inward.

Regardless of how you use draw reins, this is how the mechanics of pressure applied works.

If you’re going to use equipment, it’s important to actually understand HOW it works because being in denial of physics doesn’t change the experience for the horse.

If you don’t want your horse to have pressure pulling their nose in towards the chest, don’t use draw reins.

When you pull back or apply pressure to the draw rein, it pulls downward because you’re tightening the rein and thereby shortening the distance to the other fixed point of the draw rein, which pulls the head down and in.

When it is a problem for so many horses, I believe we need to ask ourselves 1) Why? What are we doing that may make this higher risk in our horses and 2) what can we change in how we are developing our horses to support this junction…

When we can think critically more often, and react emotionally less often, we can do better for our horses. This is honoring tradition, while embracing modern awareness. Learning more about the possible detriment we are doing to our horses, AND getting curious to find better ways!

Dr. Workman treated 171 Lumbosacral joints in the past 12 months. Why? Because it is one of the most problematic junctions in the equine spine- both clinically and also on necropsy results.

The lumbosacral joint is the main point of flexion and extension of the pelvis. This is the spinal section responsible for pelvic flexion and hind limb engagement (NOT the sacroiliac joints or ligaments). This major site of flexion has a central spinal disc section, associated articular facets, intervertebral foramen and the intertransverse joints between L6 and S1. It is mainly flexed through the hypaxial muscles- particularly psoas major. Some studies show alterations to the anatomy between the lumbar spine and sacrum at 30-33%. This means 30% of horses have an underlying structural issue that will cause complications to their ability to flex their pelvis (engage hind end). This structural defect will likely lead to not only lower-level performance but also higher rates of degeneration (arthritis, joint erosion, foramen narrowing, nerve impingement - PAIN).

That is why we treat so many lumbosacral joints and far fewer sacroiliac joints. Clinical exam and detailed ultrasounds can help us determine if this region is problematic in your horses.

As head trainer at Indigo Trails, I’ve spent years refining a program that honors the whole horse—body, mind, and soul. Our commitment to thoughtful, ethical training has never wavered—but the vision continues to deepen.

I’m not just here to develop FEI athletes (though I love that part too).
I’m here for the horses who need us most.
The ones recovering from physical injury.
The ones whose bodies carry trauma.
The ones who’ve been labeled “difficult,” “broken,” or “done.”

This is a place for healing and rebuilding. For developing horses from the inside out. For rewriting stories that deserve a second chapter.

My work today bridges rehabilitation and performance, and it’s built on a foundation of nervous system support, postural development, and true connection. Whether you're pursuing high-level goals in Dressage or just hoping to help your horse feel better in their body again—you have a place here.

✨ I currently have limited openings for training and rehabilitation horses at Indigo Trails. If this message speaks to you—let’s connect.

A chapter at Indigo Trails Farm that I will forever be grateful for. ❤️

A chapter at Indigo Trails Farm that I will forever be grateful for. ❤️

As one chapter closes, another begins. today we want to take a moment to honor the journey shared here at Indigo Trails with Meg Whitman and her clients.

Nearly two years ago, Meghan brought her energy, passion, and heart to the farm, and it’s been such a meaningful ride. From early mornings in the arena to laughter in the barn aisles, this time together has added a beautiful layer to Indigo’s story. We are grateful for all the memories, the growth, and the partnership along the way.

While we both are heading into new chapters, we honor the quiet wisdom of knowing when it’s time to take your next step. We’re wishing Meghan all the success, joy, and momentum as she begins a new chapter with A Driving Force Sport Horse Development & Stonewall Ponies- Emily Elek, and cheering her on as she continues chasing her dream.

As for us at Indigo Trails, we’re also stepping into our next season, a time of deepened clarity and focus, as we continue to grow The Mindful Dressage Rider (Caitlyn Bean Dressage) and evolve the farm’s mission in service of the horses, clients, and vision that guide us.

The barn may feel a little different, but change always holds space for possibility, and this season feels like a meaningful one for everyone involved. 💫
