We have opened slots for cat spay/neuter and small/medium dog neuter for Saturday March 15! We're doing what we can to help those who can't take off work during the week, and those who have to drive long distances to get to us.

Today we fixed 50 cats and dogs, performed 2 dentals, and held 11 wellness visits. We ALSO have opened up some March surgery dates, including several Saturdays. We know that numerous local counties lack affordable spay/neuter services, and we are trying to help those who need to travel long distances to reach us. With that in mind, we are adding an extra $5 charge to Saturday surgeries, with the hope that people will sign up for weekday slots whenever possible.

It also opens up our schedule to help people with weekend emergencies, from lacerations & wounds, pyometras, foreign body surgeries, etc. More information and pricing on these advanced procedures can be found at michiganpetsurgery.com .

Several updates here!!

Morse Lake Cats: All are with a local rescue, and the black & white kitty has been adopted! Gus’s blood work came back slightly improved. Red blood cells take 90 days to regenerate (if they are even able to), so this may be a slow process. He is an affectionate cuddle bug but does NOT appreciate other animals in the house. Questions about adopting any of them can be directed to Second Chance Cats and Community Cat Crew.

Scheduling: We have started opening January dates. We have ALSO opened some Saturday surgery dates, with the hopes of accommodating people who are unable to come during the standard work week, or for people who have to drive long distances, trappers, etc. This year we saw animals from THIRTY Michigan counties! If we could find an LVT or highly qualified surgery assistant, we’d be able to do more of them.

Tomorrow is our last surgery date of the year, and we’ll be posting our final 2024 numbers soon! We hope you're enjoying the holidays!

An update on Gus, one of the Morse Lake cats. He went to a rescue this week! Second Chance Cats also took the mama torti to work on socializing her.

Y’all remember Gus? The sweet boy Quick Fix Veterinary Clinic recently rescued from yet another abandonment case - the one with the collar in his mouth?

While it might not yet be a forever home, joining the CCC crew where he is warm, cozy, with feline friends and bowls full of yummy food - we think that’s a pretty great place to be this Christmas Eve.

Thank you all for supporting our efforts to help those most vulnerable among us and for celebrating with us when partnerships produce beautiful results for these little souls.

CCC has taken in an additional 5 cats from this situation (please see Quick Fix’s post for more info), they are now in foster where they’re being taught humans can be kind and loving.

And thank you to Amy at Quick Fix for working so hard to ensure Gus and Co. get the lives they deserve.

There is so much suffering, but by working together we can create so much hope.

Merry Christmas Eve from all of us at CCC.

**WE HAVE OPENED ADDITIONAL DECEMBER SURGERY DAYS**

We are closed for dentals until January (other than urgent cases), and dog neuters until warm weather returns.

January dates will not open until after Dec. 20.

The "Orange Family" from the Morse Lake property finished the 1st part of their lungworm treatment and have moved into foster at Community Cat Crew. Dahlia ripped open the sutures where we removed a broken canine of hers and we had to redo it. She is AWFUL to try to keep an e-collar on. We are currently giving her a "generous" dose of gabapentin in hopes her mouth will heal without further disruption.

Gus had a dental cleaning this week with just a few minor extractions. You can see the sores in his mouth where the collar was stuck. He is unfortunately much older than we originally thought. He is 4-paw declawed as well. His blood work shows severe anemia and his urine specific gravity is reduced, but his kidney values are quite normal. We are starting him on 2 medications hoping to improve his chances. We gave him a Solensia injection to help with his suspected arthritis, and he has been a little purr-bug ever since. We will see how things progress but for now he is staying with us.

Again, thank you all for your thoughts, prayers, and donations as we work to get these cats healthy and onto the next step in their future!

Dr. Amy

The past week has been a whirlwind! Thank you all for your support and donations to help save these cats. Special thanks to Feral Cat Solutions and 2nd Chance Cats of West Michigan for bringing us piles of supplies and taking several of these sweet animals into their foster & adoption program.

Gus continues to improve--we'll get more photos posted this weekend!

For those of you interested in adoption, please contact 2nd Chance Cats!

Betty Boop-a very soft and friendly mama who is only ~a year and a half old at max. She'd love to be someone's lap cat!

Calliope-a young dilute torti who isn't impressed at being confined inside a house instead of roaming outdoors (it's possible she isn't up to date on the local weather). She'd do best in a quieter home without small children who might accidentally let her outside.

Dahlia (who was already spayed and ear-tipped), will be getting a brief dental this weekend to look at a broken tooth and see if she needs an extraction or 2, before going to 2nd Chance Cats.

Moses (we'll get a photo of him soon), is possibly Betty Boop's baby. He's about 4 months old and has some extra toes. He has unattached dewclaws on both his rear feet so we will snip them off and send him on his way. The extra toes on his front paws will need regular attention and trimming to make sure they do not grow into his paw pads and cause him chronic pain and infection.

Enormous thanks and gratitude to everyone who stepped up without a moment's notice to help these little peanuts.

West Michigan has a solid network of rescues who get the job done, and we are proud to be a part of it.

Here's an update on the Morse Lake cats!

There are 2 cats that have not been trapped but there has been no sign of them in several days. The property owners agreed to contact us if they are sighted.

There are 2 cats who still need to be spayed, which we will do tomorrow. A few don't appear inclined to use a litter pan, so they may need to go to a good barn home (which has already been lined up).

At least 1 of the tortie's has Lungworm so we have separated them to determine who needs treatment.

Gus, the big black cat who was in severe distress, is recovering remarkably. His pupils are no longer dilated, he's walking faster, and not bumping into most objects. He is also climbing and jumping now. It's possible that his blood pressure was so high from his level of distress that it affected his retinas. He isn't out of the woods yet, but we are feeling more hopeful--perhaps everyone's good wishes, thoughts, and prayers have had an impact!

His mouth will take some time to heal and we'll have to see if any dentistry is needed when that time comes. After he's back to full health he'll be transferred to one of our adoption partners unless one of our staff or volunteers adopts him.

Donations for medical care can be made at https://quickfixvet.com/donate/ . We could also use disposable p*e pads--we're going through tons of them. They can be sent to us at: 6330 Snow Ave SE, Alto, 49302, or dropped off between 9-5 on Mondays and Thursdays. Enormous thanks to those who have donated, sent supplies, or have offered to bring them into their adoption programs!

Since last Wednesday we have spayed/neutered 164 cats, performed a foreign body surgery, and held 2 dozen vaccine and wellness appointments in addition to taking in these animals. We are EXHAUSTED, but your support is keeping us going!

For the animals,
Dr. Amy

For all those wanting an update on the cat with the flea collar stuck in his mouth, here’s a photo of him this morning. He seems to be eating more today, and prefers dry food over wet food so far.

His eyesight has not improved and we'll be sending in a bunch of tests in the next few days.

Yesterday we found out about a bunch of abandoned cats at a house very close to us. We went over there and found numerous cats but no shelter for them. With the cold temperatures we knew we needed to act immediately. Most of them are very friendly, but only 2 of them were trusting enough for us to catch with our bare hands.

We trapped 9 of them last night and got them set up in cages, spayed/neutered, and treated with flea medicine and dewormer. Today, volunteer trappers caught 3 more. We think there may be 1-2 remaining that we still need to catch.

The friendliest of them all, a full size black cat, is in awful shape. He had a flea collar wedged in his mouth which meant he couldn't close his mouth, or eat or drink. It is terribly infected. He also appears to be blind, though the reasoning for it is unclear. He will require substantial blood work and testing, as well as a trip to the ophthalmologist to determine if there is any hope of him regaining his eyesight.

If anyone is interested in adopting any of them, please let us know! These cats deserve a great home. They will be with us for a minimum of 2 more weeks so they can get their full series of vaccines, etc. Anyone who can't adopt but would like to contribute to their medical care (as well as the litter, Litter, and LITTER) that we'll be going through tons of until we have placement for all of them, can click on the link below.

The link for donations can be found here: https://quickfixvet.com/donate/ We will keep you updated on their progress!

Litter can be shipped to: 6330 Snow Ave SE, Alto MI 49302. Clumping litter only, please.

Through 9/30 of this year, we fixed 2,297 female cats, 1,982 male cats, performed 23 enucleations, 126 dentals, and fixed 237 dogs. This already surpasses our totals for 2023. Just as importantly, thanks to , we administrated 2,250 free vaccines. The majority of the enucleations we perform are due to cats not being vaccinated with an FVRCP (aka 3 in 1 or 4 in 1) vaccine. Vaccines are critical to the prevention of pain and suffering and for maximizing your pet's time on earth.

And while patient numbers do matter, it's important to not lose sight of each animal as an individual with their own needs.

The past few weeks we've been working on multiple cats with stomatitis, with owners traveling hours to bring their pets to us. We also took care of procedures for our own herd of fosters. In one of the photos you'll see a pre-molar tooth on a cat, circled. Note the reddening of gum tissue while that tissue also seems to "climb up" the tooth. That is a resorptive lesion, very common in older cats. We also posted the xray of it--you can see how it looks "moth-eaten" compared to the tooth behind it. They are painful and need to be removed.

We also came across s/n cats with other medical problems that need solving. Pictured is a young cat who has been brutally clawing at her face due to pain for reasons we don't yet know. We took several impression smears and sent in biopsies and blood work to the lab. We hope to have a treatment plan for her by early next week.

We'll have some more news on what else we're working on, as well as potential plans to bring more spay/neuter closer to GR, in the next few weeks.

Surgery slots are now open through the 2nd week in November!

Last week we fixed over 130 animals--but that's not what kept us busy. We had animals with serious dental problems, finally caught a stray who's been hanging around for a year and a half, trapped a 1/2 wild kitten who was able to sneak out of his original trap, unblocked an overweight male cat struggling to urinate--and prepared ourselves to do an urgent perineal urethrostomy on him if needed, and continued to work on cats with persistent illness.

Enormous thanks to the volunteers who pitched in so we could focus on the animals who needed us. Here are some photos from our week!
