The Vanderburgh Humane Society (VHS), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, was founded in 1957. We receive no tax-based funding whatsoever and we are not affiliated in any way with the Humane Society of the United States. Therefore, we depend solely on the generosity of the corporate community and the public at large to continue, and hopefully expand, the much-needed services we offer. Located in E

vansville, Indiana, we serve more than 11,000 pets and their families each year through a variety of programs. We are a founding member of EPAW, the Evansville Partnership for Animal Welfare, launched in 2013.

We will be CLOSED on Tuesday, September 2nd in recognition of Labor Day. 🇺🇸 (We are always closed on Sundays & Mondays.)...

Enrichment can come in many forms: physical play, auditory (sound), olfactory (smell), and a big one… TASTE! And sometimes combinations of those. Here are some examples of the daily in-kennel enrichment we provide to our dogs. 😋

This evening, the Evansville City Council unanimously voted to approve revisions to the Animal Control ordinance, which gives more protections to community cats and their caregivers. These changes align with the VHS Community Cat program, and they also give Evansville Animal Care & Control more flexibility when responding to community cats. 🐈🐈‍⬛

Thank you to our City Council (particularly Councilwoman Mosby for her focus on this), to Evansville Mayor Stephanie Terry, and to the Animal Control & Education Commission for their work on updating this language!

Two tiny kittens discarded in the trash have been given a second chance! 👑

After a Good Samaritan saw a man throw a small bag into a trash can and then heard faint meowing, he knew something was terribly wrong. Once he retrieved the bag, he found two very tiny kittens that were extremely frail and ill and rushed them to the shelter.

Named Ruby and Treasure by their foster mom, Maci, the girls have been thriving and will be ready for a new home soon! It's our mission to find them a loving, forever home where they will never feel discarded but rather adored like the true gems they are! 💍

Tomorrow is so of COURSE we're gonna celebrate! First up, we're featuring our 3 programs that allow you to "rent" a dog and give them a temporary break from a kennel. 🐶

1) Mutt's Morning Out! On Tuesday-Friday mornings at 10 am, you can take a shelter dog out for a pup cup, for a walk on the riverfront, or to the pet store to pick out a toy: https://www.vhslifesaver.org/mutt-s-morning-out

2) Cardio For Canines ! Saturday mornings, join us for a group walk to Garvin Park at 8 am. These photos are from this past weekend where almost FIFTY dogs got to go to the park to watch ducks, sniff butts, and make friends! 🌳🦆🐿️

3) Big Dog Buddies! Trained & oriented dog volunteers are paired with a dog who needs a specific focus on socialization & promotion. Being Buddies like James & Milo (pictured) can make all the difference for stressed shelter dogs! 🐕
