Hello customers. With the deer season right around the corner, here is my yearly post regarding properly caring for your deer after harvest. It begins with the hunter and not the taxidermist 🦌🦌
1) After harvest, please get your deer caped ASAP and to me. If you can’t, wrap it a heavy duty garbage bag, only allowing the antlers exposed and refrigerate or freeze. (Please see pic below) If your deer is at a butcher, stress to them that you would like it caped sooner than later. Please remember , Early season harvests in warmer weather need immediate care.
2) Do Not Rinse with water!! Moisture attracts bacteria, which causes slippage or the hair to fall out. This will be $250-$350 additional cost to the customer for an additional cape.
3) Out of state harvest. By law, the deer needs to be caped and skulled out prior to being delivered to me. I will NOT accept any out of state deer unless they have been properly caped and skulled out All the above care needs to also take place as well.
4) All deer need to be tagged and your harvest reported. Again, required by NYSDEC Law.
5) If you plan on caping your deer yourself, please follow the steps in the pics below or check out the YouTube link provided.
