This week in the Youth Farm Program we started to plant for a fall harvest . With seeds and a lot of hope that the critters will share some of our vegetables with us!

The kids got to make some lip balm in anticipation of cooler/dryer days ahead! This year the small group went with sweet orange oil and peppermint oil the addition of honey! We also added the classic combo of Shea butter, cocoa butter, and beeswax to the mixture.

What has the Youth Farm Program been up to lately?

Well, the fine kids from Stafford Junction .junction got to pick some cow peas and go on another tomato search. They also found that the strawberries are still berrying! A poor carpenter bee who sadly has left this world gave the children an opportunity to study it up close. (It is that time if year for many carpenter bees to give up the ghost.)

They also got to see a praying mantis seeking high ground on our Land Manager's gardening hat.

Of course, YFP isn't complete until you get to make a snack! The kids did a great job making a scrumptious watermelon salad with cucumber, mint, basil, and feta cheese with honey lime dressing! Yum!

We are seeking participants to sign-up and bring their string trimmers to selectively string trim Japanese Stiltgrass in predetermined areas while doing their best to avoid any native plants in the mix.

We are hoping to reduce native plant casualties, but recognize it might happen! The end goal is to carefully knock down as much grass while it is in flower before it seeds. We will be in the height of tick and chigger season, please dress appropriately and don't forget to do a check once you get home!

If you are not willing to wield a whacker, please consider coming to manually pull some stiltgrass by hand before it goes to seed!

Where: 1360 Belman Road, Fredericksburg, VA, 22401

When: August 16th, rain date: August 23rd

What to wear: long sleeves + pants, closed toed shoes, sun protection, heat protection, and your favorite tick protection!

What to bring: Water bottle, your favorite gloves, snack if you need it

What we'll provide: We will have a water cooler, bug spray, gloves, and will provide instruction.
