Love Is Blind season 8 meets Dog Day Out... and we're ready to say, "I do!"

Thanks to VCA Charities' amazing partners at Minneapolis Animal Care & Control, in collaboration with their Dog Day Out initiative, we are grateful for the success of the Fido Field Trip Program! Back in the Spring, the shelter dogs got their own “Love is Blind” adventure when the fabulous ladies of Season 8 joined the fun, taking some shelter pups out for unforgettable field trips filled with smiles.

Did you know that research shows that dogs who experience a single day outside the shelter are 10x more likely to be adopted?! These outings give shelter dogs a break from the kennel, which reduces stress while increasing community volunteerism.

It's Black History Month, and we would like to honor the memory of Dr. Augustus Nathaniels Lushington.

Earning his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1897, Dr. Augustus Nathaniel Lushington is considered to be the first Black veterinarian in the United States.

Dr. Lushington moved to the United States from Trinidad when he was 20 years old. He settled in New York, where he married Elizabeth Gavino Hubert, whose friends helped him enroll in Cornell University. He graduated with a degree in agriculture in 1894, before enrolling at the University of Pennsylvania to earn his DVM.

After graduating, Dr. Lushington moved his family to Rock Castle, Virginia, to work at the Agricultural College, before he went on to open his own practice in Lynchburg. The intense racism, however, forced him to work extra jobs as a meat inspector and probation officer.

Dr. Lushington perservered, and he would go on to work for the Bureau of Animal Industry and the Federal Department of Agriculture. He worked until his death in 1939.

Dr. Lushington is an important part of veterinary history, and we are grateful for his contributions.

Go Nuts!

It's Squirrel Appreciation Day!

While we love squirrels, this feels like a good time to talk about Leptospirosis, which is a bacterial disease that squirrels can spread to dogs and even to humans. Luckily there is a vaccine for Leptospirosis!

Please call with any questions or to schedule your pet's Leptospirosis vaccine today.

In June 1964, Dr. Martin Luther King was arrested for protesting peacefully at a motel restaurant in St. Augustine, Florida. While being transported to jail in Jacksonville, he was placed in a police car with a German Shepherd police dog, which was meant to intimidate him. Instead, the two became friends. This incident inspired his wife Coretta Scott King to become an animal rights activist. Today, Dr. Martin Luther King's dream lives on, and we are happy to honor his memory.
