Animal SOS

Animal SOS Animal SOS supports local rescues by helping with vet care and supporting fund raising efforts. We are an all volunteer group.

We also help senior and disabled citizens keep their pets, including providing low-cost spay/neuter. We provide transportation for seniors and rescues to areas inside the Columbus, Georgia area. Beginning in 2013, we are working with Columbus in their community cat program. We maintain a registry of colonies and their caregivers. This registry allows free roaming cats a chance to be returned and offers the caregivers opportunities for free and low-cost spay/neuters.

This is just a small glimpse into the reality of advanced heartworms - coughing up blood is one of many symptoms of this horrible disease.

Many of you may remember little Newspupper. We pulled him from our local animal services a couple months back. He has been in our care longer than most dogs are, because the journey to get him healthy has been such a tough one. Heartworm treatment is long, expensive, and incredibly hard on a dog’s body - especially when they are advanced like this. Despite everyone’s best efforts, it’s been a difficult road for this sweet boy. (Lucky for him & for us, he’s in the best foster home we could imagine for this journey!)

The most heartbreaking part? Heartworm disease is almost entirely preventable.

A monthly heartworm preventative costs just a fraction of what treatment does. More importantly, it spares dogs from the pain, stress, strict exercise restriction, and life-threatening complications that come with heartworm disease.

If you have a dog, please talk to your veterinarian about keeping them on year-round heartworm prevention. One small dose each month can save your best friend from months of suffering.

Newspupper’s story is one we hope fewer dogs have to live.

Mysti just wanted to pop in say thank you ALL so much for donating, sharing, and supporting her in this journey. She is recovering well from her surgeries (in the most wonderful foster home) and will be leaving on transport later this week!

Last week, we said yes to a sweet senior girl named Mysti.

When we said yes, we didn’t quite realize the medical journey we were embarking on - but when we commit, we commit fully. So the past week has been filled with enough vet bills to last a lifetime!

Mysti needed 10 teeth removed, 3 masses on her legs removed, and a mastectomy. While she’s now on the road to recovery, her care has already exceeded $1,500.

Senior dogs like Mysti are so often overlooked, but they deserve comfort, love, and relief from pain just as much as any puppy.

The most powerful thing you can do for homeless animals isn’t adopting dozens of pets - it’s making sure the pets you already love don’t contribute to the problem.

URGENT 🚨 Fosters needed for Mysti & Olive!

For a combined total of 247 days, these two beautiful girls have been living at our local animal shelter waiting for their second chance.

Our amazing friends in Pennsylvania are ready to give them that chance - but the only way we can make that happen is by finding a local foster placement for them for ONE WEEK until they can head up there on transport!

Both girls are people friendly, dog friendly, and honestly so deserving of this opportunity. Mysti is an older, chill girl who co-exists beautifully with both dogs & cats. Olive is a bit younger and more playful, and she loves having dog companions around. Both are fully vetted, and will just need a quick vet visit during their time in foster for travel health certificates!

If you can help us bust these girls out of the shelter today, it would not only be life changing for them - but also would tremendously help the team at Paws Humane Society as they desperately work to prevent any dogs losing their lives for space.

Our friends at Paws Humane Society texted us today, desperate for help with space. We are really struggling with finding available fosters right now, but Renee stepped up to take this puppy in so we could help open up a kennel at the shelter. We are finishing up her stray hold, hoping owners will come forward - but also prepared to get her on her next journey of finding a forever family if that’s what’s needed.

We absolutely need foster homes so we can help save more. Specifically, we need large dog foster homes. All short term. All dog friendly. All supplies provided.

Our rescue partners are ready to jump in & save lives, and the only thing standing between that is a foster home for the dogs to crash in for a few weeks.

We are begging. With our whole entire hearts. For the animals, for employees, for the volunteers, for the community.
