Introducing a Puppy to Your Older Dog? Here's What a Good First Interaction Looks Like
Bringing a new puppy into your home can be exciting — but it also requires patience, structure, and an understanding of your older dog’s comfort level.
In this video, we’re watching a calm and respectful first interaction:
🐾The puppy shows curiosity without overwhelming the older dog
🐾The older dog sets boundaries with body language, not aggression
🐾There's no lunging, barking, or fear-based avoidance
🐾Both dogs are allowed to observe and adjust at their own pace
🐾This is what we want to see during early introductions — low pressure, short bursts of play or sniffing, and opportunities to separate if needed. These moments build the foundation for a healthy long-term relationship.
At Newman’s Dog Training, we help families across Kansas City and Northwest Arkansas successfully integrate new dogs into multi-pet homes — whether it’s a new puppy, rescue dog, or temporary guest.
