A HUGE happy 12 YEAR anniversary to Erin, our medical records specialist (although Mia, who had surgery today and is available for adoption through the Franklin County IN Animal Shelter, stole the show in the picture!)! Of course we are all animal lovers here, but Erin goes above and beyond to give special love and attention to the animals here every day and she always helps out all staff members with whatever they need. We're very lucky she has made a career with us and we're never letting her go! THANK YOU Erin for all your hard work and compassion toward animals!!❤

Great spay/neuter cost assistance for Brown County, OH pet owners!

Great spay/neuter cost assistance for Brown County, OH pet owners!

Brown County: where we love our pets and believe in birth control. 😉
$50 cat spay/neuter vouchers
$100 dog spay/neuter vouchers

Because the only surprise anyone wants in this county is finding a $20 in your jeans pocket — not a litter of kittens under the porch.

Brown Countians have always known how to take care of their animals — from barn cats to couch dogs, we look out for them. And the best way to do that? Spay and neuter.
Because fewer litters = fewer strays = healthier pets = stronger community.

Here’s how it works:
Make an appointment with your vet (aim for about 3 weeks out).
Fill out our SNAP voucher application: bchsohio.org/brown-county-snap or just stop by the shelters to pick one up.
We’ll send you your voucher in 10–14 days.

It’s simple, it saves lives, and it keeps Brown County doing what it does best — taking care of its own.

Questions? Email [email protected] or swing by the shelter.

Let’s keep showing folks everywhere how Brown County does it: with heart, grit, and pets who don’t surprise us with 12 new “roommates.” 😉

In most cases, cats will figure out how to use shelters on their own. Here are a few things you can do to attract them if it doesn't seem like your cats are using the shelter:

▪️Be patient. Some cats need a lot of time to get comfortable with a new shelter.

▪️Loosely fill the shelter ½ to ¾ full of straw, NOT HAY. Replace the straw as needed.

▪️Remove any door flaps on the shelter. While doorway flaps help keep cold air out and warm air in, they should not be added until after your cats are used to going in and out of the shelter.

▪️Do not place food in or near the shelter. Cats instinctively avoid sleeping near food as it attracts other cats and wildlife (predators).

▪️Location is important. Place the shelter where your cats are already hanging out. More feral/less social cats typically want to shelter farther away from humans. The more secluded the shelter, the more likely cats are to use it.

▪️Place the shelter near natural cover, as opposed to out in the open where your cats may not feel safe. Cats prefer to move along walls, hedges or other natural barriers and boundaries. Place the shelter under or up against a building, fence, tree, porch, bush or some type of overhang.

▪️Place the shelter with the entrance facing away from the wind, rain and snow.

▪️Make sure the shelter is on a flat surface. A wobbly shelter could discourage cats from entering.

▪️It’s possible that your cats have another shelter where they feel safe. They may already have a shed, crawlspace or some other shelter they prefer.

▪️When all else fails, try a new location, but only after giving your cats plenty of time to explore and get used to the current location.

THANK YOU to the caregivers who have taken the time to build a feral cat shelter. Protection from the elements is critical, especially during the cold months, and your thoughtfulness will no doubt save many lives this winter.

💜🐾 Pets are family—and no one should have to leave them behind to escape abuse.

That’s why we partner with The ION Center for Violence Prevention to make sure survivors and their pets can stay safe together. Thanks to YOU our generous donors, we provide free spay/neuter and core vaccines for pets like Jasper, whose abuser threatened to hurt him too. Now, Jasper (pictured with ION Director Bridget who brought him in this week) is safe, healthy, and still with the person who loves him most. 💕

📊 Did you know?
• 71% of survivors report their abuser also harmed or threatened a pet.
• Nearly half delay leaving an abuser out of fear for their pet.

✨ You can change that. Give today: https://ucancincinnati.org/how-to-help/donate

If you are in danger and worried about your pet, please contact ION. You are not alone.
