Did you know that hurricane season officially runs from June 1 to November 30?
While Mission Mules is watching and prepping to be more capable in the case something were to happen; we also want to remind others that now is the time for you to prepare so YOU are ready if a storm does come. As we have all seen, major storms have happened in places that nobody would have imagined, so take a little time and feel more prepared!
Understanding the Threat:
North Carolina’s coastline has a history of powerful storms which makes hurricanes a constant threat to us. From the catastrophic flooding caused by Hurricane Florence in 2018 to the devastating impacts of Isaias in 2020 and Helene in 2024, our state is not a stranger to the significant impacts these storms can have. No one knows when or if a tropical system will impact North Carolina. But the risk is always here, making preparedness more of a necessity than just a suggestion.
The Importance of Early Preparation:
Preparation before a storm allows residents to address potential risks and ensure safety measures are in place before a storm threatens.
Building an emergency kit doesn't have to be expensive. You can build a well-stocked emergency kit by just acquiring a few essential items each week, making it less overwhelming. By organizing items like non-perishable food, water, medications, flashlights, batteries, and first aid kits for at least three days, you can make being prepared affordable and accessible.
Create an Emergency Plan:
Develop a comprehensive family emergency plan that includes clear evacuation routes, designated meeting points, and established communication methods. Ensure all family members understand the plan and practice it regularly.
Talk to your Family about the Possibility of a Hurricane:
Don’t be reluctant to talk with your family about the possibility of a hurricane, fire, tornado, or flood. Thought and action before the disaster hits usually help family members react wisely. Families that work together to prepare for the problem will cope better than those who do not take precautions.
Correct Potential Home Hazards:
Identifying and correcting potential home hazards helps protect your home from vulnerabilities. Install storm shutters, reinforce doors and windows, and secure loose outdoor items to prevent damage. Conduct a thorough inspection of your home promptly to identify and rectify any potential hazards.
Protect Valuable Records:
Protecting family papers is an essential part of preparing you for dealing with natural disasters. Check your homeowner’s insurance policy to ensure it covers hurricane damage. Consider purchasing flood insurance, as standard policies typically do not cover flood damage. Assemble important personal documents so they are4 easily accessed.
Plan for Pets:
Include your pets in your emergency plan. Ensure they have proper identification, and prepare a pet emergency kit with food, water, crates and other necessities. Have a plan for evacuating large animals if needed.
Stay Informed:
Stay up-to-date with weather updates and alerts from reliable sources, such as the National Hurricane Center and local media outlets. Sign up for National Weather Service or local media emergency alerts to receive timely information.
Since we are already in the middle of Hurricane season, North Carolinians should prepare now. Early and thoughtful preparation can make a significant difference in protecting lives and property. Being proactive and staying informed, prepares everyone to face the upcoming hurricane season with greater confidence and resilience. And know that Mission Mules is also working to help where needed.
God bless!
